Did a set of walking reps on this sunny, humid day, and am close to finishing this bowl of year 2016 D&R Three Sails in a slight bent black pattern etched 1977 Lorenzo Lorsan Sigma level top billiard with a gray swirl acrylic saddle stem. Abner the Eager was waiting for me under my car, so I brought him in to eat. This is the happiest that I have seen him lately. I could feel him purring as I carried him inside. Watching the Padres-Cubs game.

Today's featured smoke - TobaccoBarn's "Rockwell" smoked in my favourite Falcon, Bent Brown, Bantam Briar Bowl.

I've always loved my Falcons for Codgers, Navies and Englishes. Let's face it - they are about the smoothest smoking tools we own. However, every pipe material has it's own smoking characteristics and I've personally not found metal stems to be anything more than good for for aromatics and tobacco with an oriental or varied component. So I seldom smoke these tobaccos in my Falcons.

Another thing is that I've never had a "best" smoke in my Falcons. Until now. This smoke was absolutely the best I'd ever had for Rockwell. And a repeat was just as good. Outstanding.

For those of you who have never tried Rockwell, I'd say it is the most kick ass fodder I've ever stuffed into a pipe. It is in a league of it's own, making such "heavies" as Bengal Slices, Haunted Bookshop, Nightcap, or your personal pet peeve look like pussycats. It's one of my backups to Black Frigate, my favourite Navy, and near the top of my "endangered species" list. Have to be careful here, too, cuz I only have a bit more Rockwell than BF.

The secret to Rockwell, a true Navy, is that it features lots of cube cut molasses soaked in Burly, then pressed and dried out rock hard, in a wild field of some real hard core Virginias and a small amount of lat. So there is a lot of burning sugar in your pipe. None of my smoking buddies will touch it, and my presently defunct source of Rocky always questioned me (I always ordered over the phone) as to why I like it, because it was one of their least ordered tobaccos.

I guess for the same reason I like Bartok, jalapeno peppers, Sechaun cuisine and put mild but tasty Tabasco Sauce on just about everything I eat except for bran muffins. Don't need to. Will dd some jalapenos to the batter sometimes if I bake them. Done this since a kid. Drove my chef mom nuts. Will drop back late this evening.

I’d say try to get your hands on a chunk of G&H Brown Irish X or Brown Bogie. You might just keel over dead with one bowl lol.

Oh and I forgot to say anything, but exersize caution with those cheap Chinese pipes with mystery wood. I’m wondering if your lip bite issues might be a reaction to whatever weird chemicals and woods that are being used in them

But I don’t want to dump on your joy so you do you!

Some SPC Plum Pudding BBA in a Kalmar (the German guy who puts a squid on his pipes) smashed Rhodesian sitter with cape buffalo horn and military mount and Cumberland stem. Some people call this a bullmoose, but I think the shank and stem have to be fatter to qualify and come together like a Sav 320.

Yup, my exposure to the full range of tobaccos is limited. And I certainly don't find any of the tobaccos I mentioned "rough". Rockwell is the hardest so far. Don't think my lip bite issues have anything to do with that pipe as the latest smoke with Henry was the first in about 4 months.

Probably more a matter of hockey gloves and my alter-ego bass trombone.

I'll keep an eye out for Brown Bogie or Irish . . . . I fully intend in upping my supply of a few favourites about June 1 and paying the price (saving in the change jar already) so I'll add a tin of one of those. Thanks for the tip. 🤙 🤙
