A few years ago, after a spring thaw in Chicago, my dog was nosing around in a shrinking snowbank and he came out with a squirrel carcass that had been hidden and semi-preserved under there for God knows how long hanging out of his mouth. I tried to get it away from him, but the skin just came off in my hand and he protected what was left of this unexpected and hard-earned delicacy by gulping it down in one swallow while I was gagging and wiping goo off on my jeans. Thankfully he was fine. The jeans, not so much. That's okay though. Of the two I'd rather have the dog.
