On Thursday night, we were celebrating two of our friends' birthdays. I've never had Frog Morton; awhile back, the birthday boy had been telling me that Eastfarthing, although sweeter, was the blend he felt came closest to the now defunct blend. I asked him if anything could be added to get it closer. We didn't talk about it after that. Well, I guess he had been giving it some thought since then, because, as a thank you for the gifts we gave him and his wife, he gifted me a blend he came up with based on our earlier conversation (that combined Eastfarthing and a specific percentage of Cyprian Latakia) that he believed nailed Frog Morton and was only missing one ingredient: The PG (LOL!). I have no reference point and will have to take his word on it at this time. He said it's not a cost effective proposition taken in the context of what Frog Morton cost when it was in production. I'm glad our conversation resulted in him experimenting and coming up with this. I just wish I had the original to compare to his match. Regardless, it's special to me that my friend made it and it added a fun element to the cheerful night out we had that was filled with pipes and blends, beer and whisky.
A special blend deserves a special pipe, so, I'm going to have my friend's "Frog Morton Match" in a Comoy's Olympic Freehand, which is probably from 1948 to commemorate the London Olympics of that year.
