Tonight's Classical - 8 minutes, 3 Paganini Caprices with Perlman. You won't believe this stuff!. And I've heard it many times before and my jaw still drops. The bookends of the 24 Caprices, and one in the middle that's absolutely ferocious. Don't know what you'll smoke with it . . . . I was too busy listening! Enjoy!
OK, getting a little ahead of the celebration here, but as tomorrow is World Opera Day, I decided to listen to some tonight. I've got some favorites but in the last few years I've become a big fan of Elina Garanca, a Latvian mezzo soprano that has become one of my favorites. So I got some of her recorded music out as well as her performance as Carmen with the Met on Blue-Ray, which shows her amazing acting talent as well as her singing. Second only to Maria Callas as far as I'm concerned, no matter what Angelina Jolie says! 
But then I haven't hear Angelina sing yet...

Glad you told us that it's World Opera Day. Don't know Elina Garanca. Since I retired from the profession six or seven years ago, I haven't kept up with current happenings. But I think I shall listen to Carmen and Elina tomorrow. Great opera, played it twice. One of the most thrilling of opera performances, "Si pel ciel" from Otello, Placido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes with the Met Orchestra led by James Levine.

Since it is apparently World Opera Day, according to above posters, does this count from Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera?

Right now I'm listening to Dylan's Blonde On Blonde on SACD. First I tried the 5:1/multi channel option but it sounded kind of 'weird' so restarted it in stereo....much better

About to settle in for a 2 1/2 hour blast of Carmen for World Opera Day. I had a 4 hour thing in my head for Carmen because when we played it, there were two intermissions and a warmup included for the orchestra and cast. So 4+ hours it was. But the recordings are all around 2 1/2 hours give or take. Selected one subtitled in French, which I can sort of read. Also checked out Elina Garanca as suggested by a couple of our stalwarts in posts above. Excellent indeed, and a fine actress. I'll listen her Carmen one day soon, but as I don't stream from above and play DVDs or vinyl on my ancient traditional stereo, I'll go with an old recording I have from the Paris Opera with French subtitles.

Yer hitting my Jazz tastebuds well, but, today . . . . it's "Carmen" !!!
As far as opera is concerned, when I indulge it's usually Wagner, Mozart and Italian Renaissance masterpieces such as Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo" and the "Coronation of Poppea." However, Verdi nailed it with "Otello" which is in my top 10 of opera favourites, and I think is Verdi's masterpiece.
Never played an opera by Verdi - know his works only by recordings. You have to live in a city that has a large opera house to do this, and they have their own orchestras, so I was restricted, in a regular symphony orchestra, to more popular operas such as "Carmen", "Magic Flute","Marriage of Figaro" and even Gilbert and Sullivan (yes, I love their stuff and the music is much better than is usually acknowledged.) These operas are much more easily staged in regular concert halls, theatres, or outstanding old Churches, where permitted.
And yes, that recording with Domingo is outstanding!
