Piae Cantiones ecclesiasticae et scholasticae veterum episcoporum — published at Greifswald in 1582. Latin song and devotional of the cathedral schools of the early modern Baltic area. Utterly beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, and personally from a devotional one. I suppose a British reader would first recognise “In Dulci Iubilo” (not in this selection) much played at Carols from Kings and on Classic FM at Christmastime or “Personent hodie” (hymn for Holy Innocents’ Day but probably textual traces of an old hymn to St Nicholas of Myra alias Santa Claus) which we know as “On This Day Earth Shall Ring”.
