In my experience, the most troublesome blends to keep lit are the ones with a good portion of dark stoved virginia cavendish in them. I'm finding it difficult to get a good burn on Dunhill's Dark Flake, Rattray's Dark Fragrant and especially Mac Baren's Club Blend seemed nearly fireproof. What's the deal here?

Have you ever tried Marlin Flake? I’m convinced it’s covered in asbestos. Don’t get me wrong, I love Marlin Flake, sometimes keeping it lit is ridiculous
#1 Pipe shape. I just finished a bowl of Marlin Flake with 5 relights (2 because I set the pipe down.)
This shallow pipe is dedicated now to Marlin Flake:

And this pipe is my flake smoking machine:

I cannot even fit the tip of my pinky into this pipe. hint...hint...

#2 The other thing I’ve found is to let all of my flake tobacco dry a minimum of 48 hours, then cube cut, rub out and dry for another 24 hours before jarring. This is what works best for me, but YM...oh, you know...

I've only ever had an issue with SG Blends when I'm impatient. It annoys me sometimes because they have some of the only blends that I think taste better with more moisture, but of course then they don't burn as well. I also love tonquin (1792 and Sam's flake), and I lose a good bit of that yummy flavor when its fully dried.

I have found that age helps blends burn well in my experience. Why, I have no idea.

Dark and black stoved virginia will definitely burn slower but shouldn't be a problem if its dried enough. I've smoked some dense thick flakes of the black stoved virginia I've made, but it had to be dried crispy for a better smoke.
