I don't recall I've ever been in a "weird" place. But, I readily admit a urinal located in the middle of the mountains is surely weird. I can't visualize anyone will to truck a heavy, porcelain urinal out into the sticks just for . . . well who knows. I've sat on a toilet, in full SCUBA, under the sea, off the coast of Maui but, thousands of people have done that so, hardly weird. I wasn't smoking a pipe at the time either.

So, maybe in the rear of an Aeroflot jet. I was advised smoking wasn't allowed on Russian airlines but, if I really wanted to go to the last four rows of seats, that was where smoking wasn't allowed but, permitted. Gotta love those Russians! Didn't seem weird though.

Just about everywhere I went in NYC while I was on vacation a few weeks ago. I smoked in Central Park (a no-no) and every other park I stepped into. As a matter of fact, just about every place I went my pipe stayed in my mouth, even when ordering bagels, pizza or knishes. No one seemed to mind. I even walked around Keen’s steakhouse with a pipe in mouth and got quite a few fist bumps. None of this was weird to me, mind you.

Hey, it was New York! Most people are reluctant to make eye contact let along confront you. They all remember what happened to those two guys in front of Keen's..... and they were minding their own business. puffy

Those look like prime spots to Mike? How is the tobacco market in China?
I never looked. I was overwhelmed with the culture and people. For whatever reason, they thought I was Steve Seagal (not joking) and it was hard to keep crowds from wanting to take pictures with me. Everyone in my group including my wife were confused as to why i was getting so much attention constantly.

I don't know about weird, but as I walk around all day with my pipe clenched, I tend to forget that I have it. I have been shopping at the grocers when I realized that I had my pipe clenched. I have walked into many businesses forgetting that I have a pipe lit. Since no one has ever said anything negative, I usually just keep it clenched, and try to keep smoke to a minimal out of respect for people tolerating me. I am at the age, where people tend to just smile and nod at me a lot. But, when apologizing for realizing that I have my pipe, I have been told not to worry, "no smoking" just means cigarettes. Probably someone just being nice to the "old man."

At the grave of the late author Corey Ford. Mr. Ford was a pipe-smoker, so I thought that it would be an appropriate gesture of respect. Further, when I was done, I sprinkled the ashes on the ground in front of his headstone.

Where is Corey Ford buried? My interest in him comes through the caricaturist, Miguel Covarrubias, who illustrated the dust jackets for Ford’s mysteries written as John Riddell and the Impossible Interviews that appeared in Vogue and Vanity Fair. I’m fortunate enough to own the original art for the Impossible Interview between British Prime Minister Anthony Eden and writer Heywood Broun that appeared in the May 1936 issue of Vogue “incorporating Vanity Fair” (magazine spread below from Vogue’s archives):
