In a much more haphazard way, I've noticed this phenomenon in the process of drying out blends in a bowl or packed in the pipe overnight. The leaf burns better, and the taste unfolds more.

For example, a bowl of My Mixture 965 Match packed last night wouldn't stay lit and tasted lame. This morning, relit, it burst to life, stayed lit, and evolved full of flavor. I had it packed in a fully broken-in Nording freehand with plateau on the brim and interesting grooves in the bowl, which added to the enjoyment.

Nice article. I'm moving away from jars in favour of Mylar, but do let a tin breathe, usually overnight, before trying a bowl, there've been very few tobaccos that are not a bit, or usually a lot, better when they're left to acclimate for a couple of hours.
Some benefit from opening, leaving open, stirring, closing, then next day reopening, stirring, closing etc for 3-4 cycles, HU's Latakias come to mind, this treatment moved them from creosote to delicious.

Good read, I use those flip top Ikea jars, I did notice the shift in tone of the tobacco after a bit of time in the jar, as they are about 1/3 full. I kinda just figured that's what happens after opening a tin.

I love Greg's blends, and his articles are top notch. A true master of his craft.

this may explain why some blends the first smoke is ok but the second smoke makes you wonder how you missed it. For example popped the tin of Cairo and smoked it right away I thought not bad but not special it reminded me of one of the limited run camel cigarettes that was slightly more premium then their normal cigs. Now a week after that I got so many notes of spice along with a great tobacco taste. I always thought it was just too subtle to pick up the first time. In fact Key Largo slightly disapointed me when I opened my second tin. It was good but not as good as I remembered it to be. Well now that the tin was opened it's doing what I remember it doing which is wowing me every single time. The irony is this doesn't change how I smoke it just makes me feel like I know what I am doing more. I always pop a tin a few days before I plan to smoke it, I thought moisture was the issue not breathing. But that makes sense too. Thanks Mr. Pease for not only making such good blends I almost never buy them (not a daily smoke among them) but for also writing articles that remind me my instincts are good even if I am a bit of an idiot.

Nice article! ?

Space is limited for me, as I opted for 8 ounce ball jars, and quite a few blends are packed into them. Since I bought a lot of the 8 ounce sizes, I guess for now I’ll split up a tin into two jars. :)
