At Mass this morning our priest announced the canonization and gave a brief overview of St. Piers brief life. His love for God, the Eucharist, and our Blessed Mother. He talked of his tireless service to the sick, poor, and wounded WWI veterans. He also commented on how St. Pier enjoyed skiing, mountaineering as well as pipes and cigars. I knew St.Pier smoked pipes but was surprised our priest mentioned it.

It's fairly common now, along with Churchils cigars FDR's cigarettes and Stalins pipes or cigarettes have all gone the same way. Where I live in my late wife's country the first two presidents of the Republic, the first an almost non stop cigarette smoker the second a pipe man par excellence are no longer shown smoking cigarettes or pipes. History's there to be distorted and tuned to whatever needs to be believed to suit the current agenda.

I believe his feast day is the 4th of July. That will be an easy one to remember!
But that also means that he won't get celebrated in the USA (unless the observance is transferred), as the ordo for the USA indicates that we commemorate Independence Day with its proper prayers and preface. (Yeah, I know, that's liturgy geek-level talk, but I embrace my geekdom!)

Wonderful to see Pier Giorgio Frassati canonized!

Another pipe smoking saint is John Kemble. From Wiki:

Before he was led out to his execution on 22 August 1679 Kemble insisted on saying his prayers and finishing his drink, and the assembled party joined the elderly priest in a final smoke and a cup of sack. The Herefordshire sayings, Kemble pipe and Kemble cup, refer to a parting pipe or cup.[3] Before his death Kemble addressed the assembled crowd, pointing out that no association with the "plot" had been charged to him. The old priest went on to say: "The failure of the authorities in London to connect me to the plot makes it evident that I die only for profession of the Catholic religion, which was the religion that first made this Kingdom Christian."
