I don't think people have any idea how many infected people there are. I believe once everyone gets tested. I think the numbers will shock the government. Our economy is going to take years to get back to some kind of normal. Our medical situation is so far behind the curve that tons of people are going to die who didn't need to.

The entire world's economies are going to turn to shit and people are going to look to us for help and there will be none coming.
I am 62 and have seen some nasty shit over the years but this makes them all pale in comparison. People who are not qua ranting themselves are being stupid and putting the rest of us at risk.

When I saw the crowds at Clear Water beach the other day I knew we have a generation of stupid fucks who are going to spread this even worse.. I worry about what kind of world will be left as I have 4 kids ranging in ages of 17-30.

None of the world is ready for what is coming and if you are not thinking this is the worst thing you have ever seen, take your heads out of the sand.

I’m afraid you are right.

A few weeks ago the news reports were not so dire. Then I started seeing broadcasts from BBC and DW and realized there was a story we weren’t getting in the US.

My attitude changed immediately from concern to outright oh shit. I live in a remote area with few people and no crowds, but this is appearing everywhere, including right here in this town, so yeah, this is real folks.

This will be a before/after event for the world I fear.

The desert nomad watched Death ride by and asked her, "where are you going so fast?"

"To Persia," answered Death, "to take 3000 lives".

Months later Death rode by the nomad's tent on her way back. Seeing her, the nomad impeached her, "you liar!! You didn't take 3000 lives, you took 300,000!!"

"No," replied Death, "I took 3000 and not a single one more. It was Fear who killed the others."

Here
I've been saying for a number of years, only partially in jest, that we needed a good pandemic to restore some balance to things.

There are too many of us for our cage. If the population were reduced by half, the remainder could continue to enjoy their over-consumption of resources for another century or two.

Probably an unpopular point of view...

Harris, don't fret. Consider it Mother Nature's housecleaning!

I was the same way, I went from ah man this shite is so overhyped to, ah shite this is very real and very scary. My daughter and I have been quarantined for a week now. I have 3 nurses in the family and I’m basically getting my info from them. This isn’t just killing the elderly, this is killing people off quick and it’s very scary. A family of 8 went out to eat last week in Jersey, within one week 4 of them are dead the other 4 are in critical condition.

This certainly isn’t some democratic hoax as somebody somewhere recently said.

This article is certainly worth a read:

Mark, I think the US economy is going to be hammered and people will lose pension funds, money markets and stock equity.
I stopped my private lending around 6 months ago because I just had a bad feeling and put most all my money in cash. I still have a few deals out there but with long time customers. If they get into trouble I can foreclose on them and take their properties as I am in first position. I would hate to do it but business is business.

I don't think we've reached the point where we're "too big for the cage" .... yet. But the human race is quickly headed towards the theoretical limit the planet can sustain.

I don't know if this COVID15 thing is the big one, or not. It certainly is going to have a severe impact. What worries me more is the potential for a true Super Virus being created with all the DNA cloning and manipulation. For the most part, those experiments are highly unregulated. Or even worse, Nations still attempting to create more chemical and biological weapons.

This article is certainly worth a read:

That article is someone who BELIEVES they are correct because "math is math" so CAN'T be wrong. Nature doesn't work that way, though.

If it did, the bacteria in a petri dish would grow to a mass the size of the Earth in a few days.

The only difference between this Corona business and the many similar flu pandemics that have come before it is today's 24/7 social-media-fueled feedback loop of fear. "Fire!" keeps getting shouted in the most crowded of theaters. The above article is a perfect example.

The cascading economic fallout will do far more damage---FAR more---than what would have occured if the virus had simply run its course like the Asian flu of 1958-59, or the Hong Kong flu of 1968-69. Both killed millions, but neither stopped the world. In fact, they didn't even slow it down.

I don’t think the article comes off that way, he’s throwing out numbers to explain why he and his family decided to quarantine. It’s not about being right... I see it as a good perspective to keep in mind.

The swine flu era was also in the day and age of social media... it didn’t even come close to this.

I don't think we are totally screwed. Now if the internet went down as well... Then it would be time to invest in the future and buy a cave. I just think we are going to get a lesson on what life is like in a third world country. But then what do I know.

Now is the time to get into the market. The sky isn't falling. I look around my town and, except for the damage the politicians are doing with their "cower in place" mantra, most people I know are simply getting on with life amidst the hysterics of many. Take the reasonable precautions, don't panic and look for advantages.

Once I was known as anti-social, now I'm in the forefront. I self-quarantined many years ago when I retired from my career and refused nearly all social requests and obligations. Damned! Life got much simpler.

I’m must remain optimistic and say that all these measures will help slow the spread and eventually the number of infected will dwindle. Everyone has to stay positive and be smart. @cigrmaster the fear mongering will just create more anxiety and panic, which doesn't help a situation like this. This isn't the first economic crisis the world has seen, and it won't be the last.

That is the real, actual, factual, irrefutably reason why we're indeed screwed.

I was gonna post the following in the 'Closed all pubs' thread, but refrained, thinking I'd be stirring some kind of pot, but heck...

First they closed the pubs, but I don't drink, so big freaking deal.
Then they closed the restaurants, but I don't eat out, so BFD.
Then they closed all retail, including my tobacconist, but I'm a guy and don't shop (besides I've cellared to the roof), so BFD.
Then they closed me down, but I read the news and said 'good thinking'!
Then they raised all my taxes and with my biz closed down I couldn't pay, so the gov't seized my assets... then, as I walked into the brave new world of western socialism, I realised the ones who died were the lucky ones.
Now it's a
real BFD!

That is what I'm trying to do, but when I ordered groceries delivered (paralyzed left side, so this is the norm) I found 3 out of every four items I ordered were unavailable. Indeed the meat section was both bare and closed. (Fry's) I can see having food stocked for a couple weeks, but come on. I fear the actions of people more than the illness, sigh.

Must be the ones who live in the wilderness, because when you live in a city and everyone is so hysterical that they won't sell goods to you or provide needed services, it's impossible to get on with life. We don't exist in a vacuum.

I wish I could get on with life, but can't when even getting coins for the laudry is a hassle with the banks closing branches and doing all kinds of silly things that help little and make things worse.
