A red-eye is a late-night, usually non-stop flight known for it's discounted ticket price.
Yeah, I know what a red-eye is, I just didn't know what the hell that had to do with houses! 8O

Nope, pigs are cleared for takeoff. I'm thinking about doing something about helicopters, though. Those things are friggin' deathtraps!

Alde, as long as you're not preventing pigs, because as soon as they fly, Mrs. Cosmic buys me a new set of Beckers
I don't know what that means either...you all must be smokin' somethin' in here...and it ain't backy!

So, I take it that economists are as dense as engineers, ha ha.

Mrs. Cosmic will buy me a set of Becker pipes as soon as pigs fly.
Ahh, don't smoke Beckers and don't care :D And yes, we are dense...that's why the Fed is crapping on my retirement portfolio!!! :x

For me the hobby is the habbit. I can go without smoking but I have a hard time resisting buying pipes and pipe/cigar travel. I'm jonezin' for a pipe show about a week after I get home from the last one. 8O

Hobby here. I have a choice and I can stop anytime I want. I can stop anytime I want. I can stop anytime I want. I can stop anytime I want. I can stop.....

Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol are the three most commonly used substances to change how we feel. Tobacco seeds were found in the belongings of early man in the US SW from 12,000 BCE, attesting to our ancient roots of tobacco. In order to be metabolized substances bend that process away from its normal course. If the substance is repeatedly ingested that bend becomes semi-permanent, and when they are not the body complains by withdrawal, as it returns to normal. This constitutes physical craving, but the mental obsession with the substance is often just as potent.
You may disagree, but I believe the mental obsession is the driver and that it is dysfunction to whatever degree that finds the addictive substance so good that the smoker/drinker continues an activity that has health consequences. Any number of unpleasant things become the body of he addiction. When the addictive substance has global effects, the life of the addict declines markedly, but the effects of tobacco smoking are not so. Yet its etiology and daily practice still mask parts of life that we dislike, that they become more palatable.
Thus when I see guys claiming that smoking is just a hobby, I laugh and have some stern rebuke in mind. I think they are full of denial. I want to say, hey, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on earth and you are ingesting it daily and you're not an addict?

Ecofisherman, one of my skill sets is fishing and mostly fly fishing. I was a charter boat guide for a year in the BVIs and years later I have been a fly fishing guide off and on since 1991. Those who can't, teach (or guide) right? Hobby, habit, and sometimes job.

I agree with Saltedplug... one step closer to that set of Becker pipes. :puffy:
100% agree. I see guys all the time who smoke several times a day and say that they've quit for a few weeks once, they aren't addicted. Maybe they aren't, but they keep coming back. As a cigarette smoker, I would say all the time, I'm not addicted, thump my cigarette out to prove it, go a few days, and then drive back to the store to buy another pack in the middle of the night.
I've quit smoking my pipes too, many times. A week here, and few weeks there, but I rush back to it as soon as I can.

I can't speak for everyone. I may not call you a liar out loud, but when I hear someone who smokes several times a day tell me that they aren't addicted, internally, I laugh. What does it matter what someone else thinks anyways, right?
But, when someone new wants to know if they can dabble in the hobby and not get addicted, I just tell them, that I have heard of people dabbling with drugs and not getting addicted. So... maybe. But, be forewarned that thinking that it's not addictive at all is pure stupidity. But, believe whatever you want.

Cosmic: schrodinger's cat, it's an addiction that I enjoy as a hobby. I am both alive and dead, until someone let's me out of this damned box. :puffy: Fricking awesome, LMAO!!!!!!
Patrick McManus wrote something along the line of, "Never look at anything you love to do too hard. You might find it is silly and a waste of money.". He exaggerates a little of course, but there is a gem of truth there lol.
Pipe smoking for me is simply a pleasure. Not sure if it is hobby, habit, or addiction and basically unconcerned about it. It is something I truly enjoy and I just stop there lol!

Much as I decry labels I've noticed some easily identified types. Keep in mind that people can exhibit traits from more than one classification. :puffpipe:
A "dilettante" has pipes, maybe many pipes, all sorts of accessories, many blends hoarded and only smokes a bowl or less a week. The dilettante has no real commitment, only a shallow, probably passing interest in the long term. :puffpipe: Dilettantes" will usually deny being such. Often times vehemently.
A hobby smoker dedicates time to the pipe, has the all of the rituals down pat, can opine on various loading methods, shapes for blends, and etc. Like the model train hobbyist, he loves to show off new acquisitions, is usually particular to certain marques and will energetically argue the merits of his and others choices and techniques. May smoke as many as two bowls a day. Always looking for the latest rage in blends, unwilling to trust his own palate, in a rush to try all the "hot" blends.
A "serious" pipe smoker has enough, carefully selected pipes for a decent rotation, starts and ends the day with a bowl (with more than a few in between), cares little what others think of his choices in blends or pipes. He usually loads his pipes by scooping from the pouch, tamps with his finger when necessary and is rarely seen without a pipe, lighted or not, hanging from his mouth or, if it's in his fist, gesticulating wildly when making a point. Unlike the college professor of old, this is rarely an affectation. :puffy:
And then there are the others, a combination of some of the above, but, driven by the love of nicotine, who have settled on the pipe as being the best delivery system extant. These are, and I am one, the "addicted" smoker. Physically or simply mentally addicted, makes no difference. We simply like our nicotine.
Every member here, excepting the trolls who often pass by, can find traits we share, traits we admit to and traits we we deny, even as we readily, often unintentionally, exhibit such traits.
So, I guess labeling is still a waste of time. Too many variants! Each one of us has a style which defies classifying. :worship:

Ahh, cool! I've been a fisherman all my life, love the sport, but I've always had it on my bucket list to fly fish. I did quite a bit of light spin tackle fishing in creeks in southwest VA when i was a grad student at Va. Tech...but that's as close as I got to fly fishing.
