Thanks for resurfacing this thread; I’d not seen it before. I do enjoy a nice watch and have always worn one since high school. I’m lucky to have six generations of family timepieces that I hope will stay together in our family as the generations continue. They are (from newest to oldest and from right to left):
  • My son’s Seiko 5 from 2010
  • My own watches, including (from bottom to top) a Rolex Sub purchased in 1984, an old Seiko 5 from 1984, a Limes Chrono from 1996 (German company with ETA movement), and a Baum & Mercier GMT Alarm mechanical from 2001 that’s a surprisingly useful travel watch.
  • Tissot Le Locle, date unknown
  • Neuchetel hand wind, 1960s
  • Admiral pocket watch, 1950s?
  • Waltham pocket watch, 1894

I should have better described the generational ownership of the watches above. Each bullet-point is a generation. From the right of the photo (or from the top bullet-point down): my son's; my four; my father-in-law's; my grand father-in-law's; my great grand father-in-law's; and my great, great grandfather-in-law's. And unsurprisingly, they all work great and keep excellent time.

For my 67th birthday I bought this Orient Star from Jomashop for $380.

This one is close to my two year old Orient Star except this new one is 42mm instead of 40mm, has a blue dial and luminous hands, and most importantly a sapphire crystal instead of a domed mineral glass crystal, so I can worry less about scratches.

Just the watch for a retired senior citizen living on a fixed income in my golden years, you know?

I own two Bambino Orient watches, an Orient Mako II, and now two Orient Stars.

The Orient Star is basically the same as a base Orient, only fancier and upscale about like a Cadillac is to a Chevy or a Lincoln to a Ford.

Any Orient or Orient Star is made totally in house in Japan. They should outlast me if I rotate them, with no servicing.

I dong have if yet, but I own other 42mm watches. 42mm is the modern sport watch size. 40mm is a little dressier.

The 40mm Orient Star I have has a pie pan dial and domed mineral glass crystal, a real X Men retro style.

Quartz watches are better in every way you would measure better, but the same can be said about screw top caps on a bottle of fine wine, or an electric car over a 392 Hemi Challenger or Chrysler 300.:)

My Japanese mechanical watches stutter around the dial six times a second and my Swiss ones stutter eight, which is classier, I admit.

But the Japanese ones will sometimes run over fifty years in daily use without servicing, and ten to twenty or thirty years is expected, normal, and ordinary. I own good Japanese watches from the seventies and eighties. New ones are better.

And the Japanese are constantly improving the durability of their movements, with things like silicon balance wheels.

What helps Japanese mechanical watches is if in the unlikely event they need a new part, a brand new improved movement can be installed at home by a two thumbed amateur watch tinkerer like me.

You guys have some nice watches. I haven’t worn one since I got my first cellphone. The two watches below have a lot of sentimental value.

My wife gave me the pocket watch for Christmas in 1981 when we were high school sweethearts.

After we were married we had some very lean years while I was in college. After I graduated I landed a good job and my wife bought me the Seiko the following Christmas. I should get the battery replaced and wear it on occasion.

The pocket watch looks like the very first one I ever bought, to go with the western style tux I wore to the prom in 82.
