I'd dissent slightly. American factory pipes are pretty good, especially if you go "high end," which means about forty bucks. Dr. Grabow Royaltons are good pipes, good acrylic stems, nice shaping, good airways. You can always graduate to high end Japanese artisanal pipes if you happen to win the lottery.

Pipepedia is a great place to start. The info there is relatively brief, designed for a beginner, and is great way to get oriented before diving in here, particularly with respect to the different types of tobacco. In other words, you'll get more out of browsing here if you get that base knowledge at pipepedia.

Here's my 2 cents..

Buy a $100+/- Sav, Pete, Nording, etc.. no more than a 1/4 bend.

I would buy the following of Dunhill tobacco it good solid tobacco and the tobacco is always at the correct moisture.

_Nightcap - English

_London Mix - Oriental

_Aperitif - Scottish

_DeLuxe Navy Rolls - VaPer

_Royal Yacht - Va based light aromatic

After smoking about 1/2 of each tins have someone load your pipe blind and try figuring out what you are smoking.
