Walked into a local B&M today and they had a box of pipes “some guy” had just sold them. They intended to use them to practice refurb but said they would sell any of them for $50 as is. Bought three Larsens and a Stanwell. There was a 1978 Dunhill shell bulldog, more Larsens, and Savinelli Punto Oro 320EX in there too but I passed on those.

If there are any Larsen experts out there AHEM @dmcmtk I could use some knowledge on these shapes/grades/era/maker, etc. Shapes are listed as 77 (the one with horn), 107, and a “Straight Grain” with an F stamp. The Stanwell is an 87 with “Stanwell Sterling” on the band and a regd #

If you don't get any answers here, you might want to talk to Dave at MKE-Law pipes or Mike at Briar Blues. Bot are pretty well informed.
I'll keep that in mind! If I get nothing here (which is looking more and more likely) I'll reach out to mike and @mkelaw

What ever happened to @dmcmtk ? I can't seem to find evidence of him being here recently, I know he had piles of Larsens.

No one wants to give you info because they want to steal your Larsens. Go reach out to Mike and Dave and see what they say. Now I am curious what you have. I think you scored big.
Hahaha, I'd like to have a little more faith in our community than that! Regardless I won't be selling them, especially if they end up having any kind of good story ;)

Just emailed both Mike and Dave.

I believe the "F" is for freehand. I was going to sell my era 1968 Larsen but loaded it up and was given a cool dry blisful somoke. Not selling now!

Interesting. Most of what I've read indicates that the "F" stamp is the bottom grade for straight grain pipes made by larsen. Apparently the scale was F and then 1-10. Basically "F" stamped pipes were straight grain pipes that were downgraded for some reason.

I have seen some skepticism of that in some threads though, and in perusing hundreds of larsen pipes in the last few days, and I have seen plenty of F pipes that had far more spectacular grain than 2s or 3s so you may be on to something.
