Noticed a lot of self portraits from Vinny. This is around the time he chopped off his ears. Other than the fact that he was, I guess, into self mutilation, I noticed his pipes. The following seems to show possible spigot. I'm not sure when spigot came into use. But I guess it was during WWI. This portrait was in late 1880s. So.. What's your guess on the white part on the shank/stem? Horn? Wood?

Hell, who knows. I can tell you for sure that the guy ranks in the Top 5 all-time as a painter, His "Starry Night" is just magical. Oh, the guy did a lot of self-portraits.

Spigot mounts have been available at least since the mid 19th century. Military mounts are supposed to have come about during WW1. My guess, based on what I'm looking at, is Briar, silver, and vulcanite.

In another painting, which might be the same pipe as the self-portrait you posted (although it lacks the same flair at the top), it appears to be horn or silver.

Don't know much about paintings, but I do enjoy his arts. Remind me of beautifully rusticated Peterson.

He only lopped off the lobe, not the entire ear. A very disturbed man, he was genius with a brush, paint and eye.

I read this book this summer, Van Gogh: The Life. Very interesting on how they use information from first hand people to rebuild the story if his life where the famous, Lust for Life, misconstrued.
He was most likely bipolar self medicated with alcohol. He actually was famous in his lifetime with his work finally getting big dollars, just before he committed himself to a state of the art medical facility (for that time). And, according to witnesses he was shot by a kid accidentally, instead of suicide. The kid later on in life confessed. But, Vincent was friends with the kid, so he died without pinning the shooting on anyone but himself. The book talked about his pipesmoking somewhat also. Good read.

There was a 2017 animated film about him called Living Vincent, in which every frame is an oil painting. 125 artists worked on it.
