CRF, Virginia Flake, Red Carpet, Openning Night are at least four that I know of that were really good uncased Virginias in flake form that are regular in their lineup. Most of the Small Batches were really good flakes also. But, as far as having nice consistent flakes like the European companies do, we've never had a US company that came close to those.
I was gonna say, in my experience it seems like for some unknown reason flakes come from the old world and kakes come from the new and ne'er shall the two mix lol
No, Big Tobacco, specifically Altria fka Philip Morris, through subsidiary John Middleton, still sells codger blends, e.g., Prince Albert and Carter Hall.

Their flakes were broken flakes. A little drier than C&Ds, but about the same as C&Ds Virginia Flakes that I listed above.
McClelland was also berated for their flakes back in the day. But, I just have never seen an actual US made flake that was as perfect for folding as the European ones.
A little off the subject , but I'd be curious to know the corporate reason why Middletons discontinued their cherry flavor . 50 years ago it was in all the drug stores...........
Literally only those 2 though when Middleton's portfolio used to be almost a dozen different blends (Cherry, Walnut, Kentucky Club, London Dock, Sugar Barrel, etc.). It would honestly not surprise me to wake up one random day and see them gone forever too. They actually were both gone already for about a year or 2 around 2020 when they moved all production to the Dominican Republic and nixxed all pouches and their Cherry blend. They only brought the CH and PA tubs back afterwards.
At this point I assume the only thing keeping them alive is a slim, ever waning ratio on some accountant's spreadsheet balancing the cost of buying plastic tubs and switching over the line from Black & Mild's VS. the revenue they are bringing in from folks (mostly in their 70's and 80's) who've never been on a pipe forum and smoke nothing else than their tub-o-albert in their lives.
Prince Albert gone?!? Absurd you say!? Yes, I know... just as absurd as treasured staple Americana blends like Edgeworth Ready Rubbed or Mixture #79 being discontinued... Forgive my Chicken Little tendencies...
To my understanding from people posting in the past, it was not actually cherry flavored. Cherry was only in the name; it was never a flavor.
I’d only had it once and scorched myself on it, because I was trying to get the cherry flavor (I was also a neophyte) but once I read that it was only in the name, it made sense.
What's even more crazy is that they STILL SELL the cigars! lol
Literally they make the same exact tobacco and stuff it into cigars but determined that taking the time to stuff it in the same exact plastic tubs as they already use for CH and PA to be corporate waste.

This is what I've heard too. That supposedly (like Middleton Walnut) it was actually named after Cherry Street in Philadelphia (Middleton's founding location) same as Walnut Street... not for cherry or walnut flavor.
Now, is this true? We'll probably never know for certain. What I do know for certain though is that its flavor/aroma is unlike anything close to any other cherry flavor or aroma I've ever experienced before. Just as many of the old codger toppings aren't like anything experienced in new standardized food grade flavorings.
Being my grandpa's staple it still holds a special place in my heart and I'm lucky enough to still be able to enjoy it.. but I'm sad others one day won't because once Altria stops it there will be no match.
