So does that mean that sutliff closure won’t affect most pipe smokers, and if it does it will be more along the lines of “oh my blend tastes different, time to find another one?”

I really don't know what % of pipe smokers preferred Sutliff brands . But for many of us who did , the reaction wasn't quite so passive . I genuinely rocked our world ............

It will definitely affect what is put in the house blend jars at tobacconists.
The online buyer may be a little more savvy, and will definitely notice that their peach raspberry bulk is no longer available.

I completely agree bro. For those who knew sutliff and smoked their blends/what was made by them, their closure is a big deal.

I’m just trying to wrap my head around the existence of a significant pipe smoking demographic that is not connected to either forums, magazines or purchasing wholesale - whether online or not. I completely understand that my unconscious bias is due to my age, and also the differences between NZ society and places which have a strong history of pipe smoking.

That aside, this rambling is also me trying to figure out where I stand with cosmic’s comments above about Sutliff being known mostly for the goopey goop bombs. Not that it really matters anyways.

In regards to the OP, what is happening with that Toad and tale US tobacco company that was posted about here recently?

As a side note, even members on here occasionally get confused and think that Dunhill was making pipe tobaccos for the last... what, 100 years or so... and that Peterson is actually making them now. So, even a member here with access to all of this information on the forums can still not understand.

Nobody has a clue and anyone saying they know is bullshitting. But if I were to guess, I’d guess that Lane already fills a significant role having produced several of the most popular pipe tobacco blends around. In a way, Sutliff and Lane overlapped, so Sutliff gets it in the neck except for the four goopers.
Because, despite the contempt expressed by some purists here, candy flavored tobacco outsells all the hair sheets by a country mile.

Sutliff probably did a whole lot more… but, if I said that Willie Nelson was mostly known for smoking dope and playing sappy country music, I’d be correct… even though he did so much more than that in his lifetime. He saved the farming industry by organizing Farm Aid, he wrote many of country’s greatest hits for other artists, helped keep Waylon Jennings alive for an extra ten years, and helped many artists get their start, and established Austin City Limits. But, he is mostly known for… Pouring goop on leaf. Right? I mean dope and sappy country.

Same with Zappa… he is mostly known for his childish 10 year old fart joke humor lyrics, but he did so much more. This may trigger a deep Zappa fan, but ask the average music fan, and that’s what they’d say.

It may trigger @sablebrush52
But the average pipesmoker would say the same thing. But, that is how the guy who buys his tobacco at the drug store and goes home to smoke his pipe alone in front of the evening news is going to think of Sutliff. Plus many other pipe smokers. Is it fair? Everyone can see the same thing from different angles and interpret them their own way. It’s called perspective.
Of course they aren’t. Most likely the bulk they’re buying has been renamed.
I just object to people pissing on the grave.
Others are free to relish it.

I think that the problem here is interpreting what I said as contempt, when I intended it to be levity. I mean, I didn't say they suck goose farts, or good riddance to the swill peddlers, or anything like that. I was just being a goofy goober calling them masters of gooping. Hell, everyone on here has referred to US aros as goopers at one point or another.

I definitely have a hard time believing that most pipe smokers don't at least buy their tobacco online.. even if they don't participate in forums. Even here in the U.S. Tobacco specific shops are rare and ones that aren't 90% cigars or weed accessories even 10x rarer than that. While I definitely believe there are people out there smoking only the captain black they buy at their gas station.. I genuinely believe a simple majority of pipe smokers have to buy online... simply for the fact that 95% or more of the blends that exist I have NEVER seen in a physical retail location.

Now I know that captain black probably sells 50X more than any of those others... but in a world where a significant portion of people even buy their groceries online, I can't believe that we are that slim of a minority in this already minority hobby.
