After many tries, I finally got in touch with Frank this afternoon, but only for about a minute or so. First I called the hospital, and told the person who answered what room I wanted. Then I was switched to the nurses station for that room, where a nurse checked and saw Frank was available for a call. Using their mobile phone they connected me to Frank. A very lousy and scratchy connection made it difficult for Frank and me to talk, and then we lost our connection. Must have been some storms between Ohio and Michigan.
But Frank did say they have been getting him up and into a wheelchair, which has to be a plus after being bedridden a month. He also said he’s in a fair amount of pain, whicb is to be expected since he’s been so inactive for so long. He may well be sent home after a few more weeks to complete his recovery, since Medicare only pays for a set number of days in a nursing home. At least he does have a caregiver at home, and will have to use of visiting nurses.
I’ll try again Sunday to reach Frank again. But I’m also going to see if I can reach his caregiver and get Frank’s address at the nursing home, so anyone who would like to might send him a card to cheer him up and make him feel a bit less alone.
