Who all here enjoys a nice Underberg after a good meal? It’s been a while, but I used to live by a European restaurant and bakery that carried them and I would buy those things by the case. Then again, I love War Horse Bar.
I’m thinking about taking up the Underberg habit again.
Any other fans of this digestif here?IMG_5748.jpeg

I’ve never had it but I just read what it tastes like and it sounds like something I would like.
if you get a chance, try it. It actually does seem to be a good digestive aid.
Sounded intriguing until I saw 44% alcohol.
Yes, for better or worse it is alcoholic. It’s odd that it’s not age-restricted here in the US. I suppose the taste is strong and (to some) unpleasant enough to act as a deterrent to abuse on its own.

I’m a long time fan for several decades. And had a colleague that was a Swiss-educated doctor of pharmacology. He validated some of the claims and the precise methodology of the preparation and standardisation of several of the constituent ingredients. Especially the purity of the alcohol and it’s very low histamine levels (with publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals). It’s an acquired taste, but if you can manage Jaegermeister, you can tolerate Underberg. Jaegermeister is full of sugar, mostly sugar, whereas Underberg is zero sugar. It’s beneficial after a heavy meal. Popular in Europe, customary and not unusual after dinner to have an Underberg, or Fernet-Branca (Italy), Unicum (Hungary), etc. In South Africa amongst the sales team, a common “morning after” cure was Underberg and Coca-Cola. Cheers!

Locally, it became popular by way of a burrito joint called New Wave Burritos.

The proprietor was an ardent fan, so they began selling it at the register. What started off as a novelty quickly gained traction and became quite popular.
New Wave sadly and unceremoniously shut down a while back, and the ‘berg went with it.

As an aside, the building has now become a Mexican/Indian restaurant. Tikka Tacos- I actually tried it for the first time time just yesterday! I was impressed and I’ll be going back.
No Underberg though..

apparently some teenagers with more money then anything else will get a buzz off the stuff. I personally preferred vanilla extract for that.

the mix with coke is surprisingly good. I've had it a few times just for the taste.

When my parents bought their property back in the ‘60’s we found a bunch, probably hundreds, of empty vanilla extract bottles buried in one area. The really old ones with a cork stopper. My dad said they were from prohibition times.
