@mingc I've tried all these except Gold Block in my clay pipes. Condor & St. Bruno are my favourites of these but I like Clan as well. One of the Scottish Highlander re-enactors I met at the Bonnie Prince Charlie weekend in Derby a few years ago was smoking Clan in his clay pipe; I thought the tartan packet went with his costume...
What was in his sporran Dan?
Course, in Bonnie Prince Charlie's day most of the Redcoats would of been on the snuff. You should try it Dan, good for clearing the head snuff is.?

The only one of those I haven't tried is Cabbie's Mixture, so let us know how you think it compares to St James's Flake.

The other three are all excellent, though I find Squadron Leader a touch heavy on the latakia (then again, I've gone off latakia in general).
To be honest, the cabbie mixture was a bit advanced for me, if that’s the right phrase? Being a newbie and only tried 1 or 2 tobaccos which have been aros it was a bit complex, not awful but a bit much I think. I think the others being flakes were a bit to damp and again being so green I lacked the experience to keep them alight.

BTW Gawith Ennerdale Flake should be on your list of blends to try. Maybe not now but you owe it to yourself to try it at least once. Some ppl hate it and some love it (I adore it). You can buy a little 10g sample to see what you think. I'd say Revor Plug should be on your "to try" list as well. Sadly you can't get a sample of that one so you'd have to take a gamble and buy a 50g bar. It is quite strong so maybe give it a miss if that's a factor.

I find with Full Virginia and St James, if I rub them out quite well then they stay lit fairly decently - I'd suggest that one flake per bowl (maximum) is sufficient, even rubbed out they are quite thick and so need to be packed loose, and they are long smokes in my experience, but very rewarding.

Good advice given ............Just remember that some of the UK OTC's will smoke real hot to some people Gold Block and Clan for example need to be sipped and not overheated by puffing along.

Remember that some baccy needs drying.....or you will have slightly flavoured steam.

If you go for Condor....(i Like it on occasions)....use a cob or a pipe that you will always want to smoke Condor in.....because........"Once a Condor pipe .....always a Condor pipe".

Samples are quite a good idea....mysmokingshop and GQ are my go to shops in the UK.

I agree with Chris.....Revor is worth a try.....its a plug so needs to be cut (I then rub and dry). Classic UK taste of old....how long it will be with us nobody knows!

Condor RR or Plug are worth a go. I am a bit behind the times on Gold Block although the last sample I saw resembled RYO. Any of the Gawith blends are pretty reliable although you might want to steer clear of the
Best Brown twists and stick with the flakes until you find what you are happy smoking. Try as many things as possible until you find something that speaks to you. Good luck!

@condorlover1 I've lost count of how many packets of Condor RR I've smoked in my clay pipes - I've noticed a distinct floral taste (geranium?) but never had the infamous Condor ghost.
I'm going to see Redcoats & Revolutionaries at Cromford Mill this year and will be taking one of my Jamestown clays along:
I've been in discussion with @Birddog66 regarding suitable pipe baccy to smoke while I'm there; at last year's event the blacksmith lit my clay pipe with an ember from his forge!

Think about it. Years of training with an anvil and hammer understanding the heating of metals and what does he do? Meets a historical uniform fetishist who wants his pipe lit from a burning coal. I mean really. It is the end of civilization as we know it Dan!
@condorlover1 I'm thinking of getting a slow match to light my clay pipes when I go to re-enactments...
I've seen a photo of an English Civil War re-enactor lighting his clay pipe with a length of match cord and would like to give it a try.

I’m now starting my tobacco journey!
As you may have read in my few meagre posts I’m very new to pipe smoking, first tobacco I tried was an aro cherry and vanilla, not a clue of the brand but it was pleasant, then I tried Century vanilla custard and Gwaiths tropical which I didn’t enjoy either so much.

In my introduction post I was recommended to try some no aros, so now very keen to try something nice but of course being so green I haven’t got a clue what to try.
looking through some posts and googling them a lot have come up as hype like plum pudding and Carter Hall, and most I can’t get hold of in the uk ( there is one shop I can mail order from but a minimum order of 1100g must be met cray)

So can you please recommend some beginner friendly full flavour tobaccos, or must try’s that will ease me into this ever expanding world of pipe smoking!
Thanks
I would advise you to go down the 10g samples from GQ tobaccos etc, and then look on the SP smoking pipes web site. Where you can spend hours and then order a few one ounce bulk samples. They have the best postage rates to the Uk that’s why we love them.

@marconi I've ordered from Smokingpipes.com and I'm amazed by the lower cost of pipe baccy over there. I thought I might get taxed on import duty but hasn't happened yet:)
Going to save the Pirate Kake for the Pirate Mutiny at Matlock Bath in August, the Yorktown for the Redcoats and Revolutionaries and the Virginia Cake for the Jamestown event.
I think these will be very well suited to the livin history re-enactment events!
Can't wait to fire up my Jamestown clay pipe at the Jamestown event!

I’m in the UK and faced the same problem when I started. You can order from Smoking Pipes in the US. They ship to the UK and if you use the cheapest possible postage your tobacco will arrive within eleven days 99% of the time. There’s a huge selection and I recommend starting with 1-2 oz samples from the bulk section.
You are right that many aromatic blends promise more than they deliver but that’s not to say they’re all bad. Most listed blends on SP have reviews to give you some idea of what you’re getting.

Look at the bulk section and I’d recommend C&D (Pegasus, Belmont Station, Plantation Evening Bradyville), Kramer’s (Cary Grant, Father Dempsey, House Aromatic) and some Sutliff blends (Revelation, Duke Albert is a Prince Albert match, Ready Rubbed Match, Burma Road, Lane IQ is a good old standard. Try to keep your order to around 12oz and you shouldn’t have any trouble.
Carter Hall and Prince Albert are not available in small packs anymore.

Warning; higher priced shipping options don’t make it arrive any faster, cheap and untracked is the way to go.

I hope this helps, I try to put in one order a month, when you find a blend you like just up the quantity on your next order.

Estervals in Germany is another great resource, but I’d avoid the European blends, you can get Peterson, Amphora, Ashton’s, Capstan etc at much cheaper prices than you can here.

Good luck

Thanks everyone,

I have ordered a sample pack from GQ :)

SG Virginia flake, SG squadron, SG cabbie mixture and St James flake
Cant wait to give them a try
Excellent intro pack. I'd recommend starting with Squadron Leader. A nice cool burning lighter latakia blend is always a good introductory tobacco in my opinion. Much more forgiving than a Virginia flake in terms of cadence and technique. Let us know what you discover!

Edit: Just realized this is an older post and my reply is very late. ?
Carry on.

I forgot to mention VaPer blends, Solani 633 is available in the UK but half the price at Estervals. Escudo is a coin cut and one of the finest blends available. Also GH Louisiana Flake and Peterson Deluxe Navy Rolls are definitely worth a go.

As far as English style blends, the Kramer’s Father Dempsey is a good mild starter, or Sutliff Lavish English which is mildly aromatic. SG Perfection is another great one.

Also remember that some topped blends are a little overwhelming at first and need a few weeks in a jar to mellow. Examples would be Bengal Slices and Black Frigate, both excellent blends but need a little time to air out as it were.

Information overload but you’ll find what’s right for you in the end.
