I’m in the UK and faced the same problem when I started. You can order from Smoking Pipes in the US. They ship to the UK and if you use the cheapest possible postage your tobacco will arrive within eleven days 99% of the time. There’s a huge selection and I recommend starting with 1-2 oz samples from the bulk section.
You are right that many aromatic blends promise more than they deliver but that’s not to say they’re all bad. Most listed blends on SP have reviews to give you some idea of what you’re getting.

Look at the bulk section and I’d recommend C&D (Pegasus, Belmont Station, Plantation Evening Bradyville), Kramer’s (Cary Grant, Father Dempsey, House Aromatic) and some Sutliff blends (Revelation, Duke Albert is a Prince Albert match, Ready Rubbed Match, Burma Road, Lane IQ is a good old standard. Try to keep your order to around 12oz and you shouldn’t have any trouble.
Carter Hall and Prince Albert are not available in small packs anymore.

Warning; higher priced shipping options don’t make it arrive any faster, cheap and untracked is the way to go.

I hope this helps, I try to put in one order a month, when you find a blend you like just up the quantity on your next order.

Estervals in Germany is another great resource, but I’d avoid the European blends, you can get Peterson, Amphora, Ashton’s, Capstan etc at much cheaper prices than you can here.

Good luck
@Birddog66 I've just finished my sample of Bradyville; going to save the Yorktown for the Redcoats and Revolutionaries event and I'm thinking of taking some Virginia Cake when I go to the Jamestown re-enactment.

Keep your eye out for Germain's Rich Dark Flake, which is sold as a bulk in the UK. A bit different from what is being recommended, but something I suspect you will enjoy. Just remember to dry the hell out of it. Same goes for any Gawith or Gawith & Hoggarth blends.
That's if you can get it! In the last year or so the main Germain's blends sell out very quickly. I get the email alerts from a couple of tobacconists and managed to get some Brown Flake but i've been trying to get my hands on some Medium Flake and I haven't had any luck. The 500g bags come into stock from time to time but at £150+ they are out of my price range.

@smudgersmissingleg That's still loads cheaper than 10x OTC pouches (Condor, St Bruno, Clan etc)...

Yes, but it's too much for my budget. I normally buy 2 - 3 tins at a time unless I'm flush, which isn't often?. Luckily i've got a few tins of Germain's RDF & Brown Flake in the cellar. The only one I need now is some Medium Flake as i'm running low on that. I just keep my eyes peeled?.

I could imagine the Sealed Knot re-enactors going to the pub in costume on the last night before the smoking ban in 2007, drinking ale out of pewter tankards and smoking their clay pipes. I think they'd have smoked Condor or St Bruno, possibly Erinmore. Whatever they were smoking, I bet the pub must have smelled so good; I can almost smell all that pipe smoke!

Is Squadron Leader topped with something Lakeland-y? I initially loved it, but stopped smoking about halfway through the tin because something in the smell was grating on me. I ended up sealing it up, hoping I can come back to it some day.
Never had this problem with any other English blend.

Think about it. Years of training with an anvil and hammer understanding the heating of metals and what does he do? Meets a historical uniform fetishist who wants his pipe lit from a burning coal. I mean really. It is the end of civilization as we know it Dan!

He says he likes the smell of the twist I was smoking at the Georgian / Redcoats & Revolutionaries event at Cromford Mill.
