UK Members: How Are You Staying Cool?

I'm over 75, have COPD and live in the southern US (South Carolina). The hot temps and humidity are pretty much unbearable for me. I have to stay in the AC most of the time. When I was growing up in the 1950's my home didn't have AC. My parents used window fans and floor fans to keep the house cool. Of course being a kid in the 50's the heat & humidity didn't bother me all that much. Just think this is just around the corner.

@ray47 I thought you shouldn't smoke if you have COPD...
I met a pipe smoker in Chesterfield and he said he had emphysema (not caused by smoking as he used to work with asbestos).

I live in Sarasota FL and I keep my home at 74 degrees. I also have a whole house de humidifier which does a good job on the humidity.
At peak times my ac bill is only around 250.00 a month. My house is built so well that I don't lose ac. I haven't had to put the heater on for a few years now as it stays around 65-70 even if it is 50 outside.

I heard on the radio that it reaching 40°c in the UK right now, for the first time ever. They also said that homes there are designed to stay warm, not stay cool - only 5% of homes have AC.

So what are you doing to stay cool?

I'm worried that @mawnansmiff 'S vintage book collection will just spontaneously combust.

I thought the Brits where just naturally cool. That's what pop culture has told me. My suggestion is to stay inside and watch every single episode of Time Team.

Probably shouldn't, but I'm stubborn and I'm going out happy with a pipe in my mouth.
