It's just another example of the insane nanny state in the UK.

They're talking about bringing in laws about spreading "misinformation". Who decides what's misinformation and what isn't? The fuckers who are in charge, that's who. Free speech is dead and buried in the UK.

A little while back a mother was arrested in front of her children and locked in a cell for seven HOURS after calling a transgender woman a man on Twitter. I shit you not. Someone didn't like something that someone else had written on Twitter so they complained to the police. The cops went round to this woman's house and arrested her. Try getting your head around that mental illness.

The irony being that in half of all regions in the UK, the police have made no arrests for burglary in the last year. The social contract is becoming very frayed.

Grim thread, this. Surely at base for this decision is the issue of centralized, government run (or not run, as the case may be) healthcare. The government controls it in Blighty so the government gets to call the shots. That is always the problem when government controls things. What drives me up the wall is that, like here, tobacco is the first target, but smokers are a drop in the bucket compared to those who overeat sugar and fat in front of the tv. Talk about a toll on the healthcare system!

Also, that Farage photo...dead on. Now I get the attraction. I hope he blew the smoke in a certain direction...

They're probably too busy checking Twitter to make sure nobody has written anything that might cause some hurty feefees. Your average cop must hate this bullshit. I'd guess that most people join the police because they want to catch bad guys, not arrest people for something mean they wrote on Twitter.

I wish the UK had its own version of the First Ammendment. Sadly, we don't.

Don't worry mates. Once the damned commies realize they are running out of the reliable source of income for the political class, they will jump right back into tobacco business. Either that or raise tax on beer and coffee. Maybe air.
Maybe that’s why they’re pushing marijuana so hard now: mentally castrate the potties, and tax them for the privilege.

I've often wondered if there's some link between nicotine and free thought, as ridiculous as it sounds. Even if it's just the energy it gives you. Although judging by some posts on this forum... :ROFLMAO:

But sometimes it's hard to think of a great author or journalist who didn't smoke!

I started thinking along this same line a few months ago, then my wife sent me this:

Apologies for being off-topic!

People have said that a total ban on smoking is coming since the 70's. Both parties have been actively working towards this. It really amuses me when people act like this is a new thing or one political party over another,. I call BS. This also is not a few people in a small secret organization pulling strings. It's the will of the majority, which is how we are ruled. Look around, we aren't exactly a majority. I don't even like smokers. puffy cigarette smokers anyways.

Hate me if you want, but its the truth. But, they always tend to kill the guy who is willing to say that the Emperor wears no clothes. So... you guys have fun.

At least you've got the First Ammendment to protect you. If any politicians tried fucking with that they wouldn't get very far. No way would the majority stand for that.

It's ignored and fucked with all the time. All they need is a good excuse.

If our constitution was respected and upheld then yes, we'd be safe. Sadly the 1st isn't being upheld, neither are the 2nd, 4th, or 9th.

Our 9th amendment is often ignored, but it covers smoking and many other rights that have been converted to privileges.

Did our founding fathers leave us no tools to protect the individual from the majority?

Straight democracy is mob rule... We luckily weren't born into that kind of mess.

All you ever hear anymore is about our democracy... Not much mention of the Republic these days, from either side.

No one's disputing that! I think if you polled the general population in the US and the UK, they would say they believe in an individual's right to choose, liberty, freedom etc. They just don't in practice. No surprises there. We are in the minority, that's true, but I'm not convinced that makes us wrong. (And just for the record, I don't believe anyone is pulling the strings - there is no one competent enough to hold that up for long).

What is a new thing is legislation that will actually prevent me from smoking in public beer gardens, and a generational prohibition on tobacco.

I agree this has been discussed for decades, but it certainly feels to me like both the UK and the US (and Europe as a whole) are becoming increasingly puritanical (both the public and the governments) - would you agree with that?

A Republic would refer to a strong centralized government that has authority over states.

But, the arguments have been made over the decades that smoking hurts people around you that haven’t made the choice to smoke. The side against smokers has won over and over in courts. It is settled law now. But, I’m just the messenger.

I just have insulated myself with a huge cellar and the ability to grow and cure tobaccos…. Because I have listened to the writing on the wall.
