I discard, also these are the veins of the leaf not the stem. Tobacco leaf stem is big.
This is correct, and I also discard any veins that I find. If there is still leaf attached to it then I will pull that off before discarding the vein but I don't think the veins improve the flavor and they definitely don't help with an even burn so no matter how cheap I am in most facets of life, veins get tossed and not smoked.

Surprised nobody here yet has mentioned my personal OCD strategy... I see it as best of both worlds. I specifically search for stems and chunkier, drier bits for my first pinch (since they tend to congregate at the top of the bag/tin/jar since they are less heavy, it works out). I then load the regular tobacco on top of that.

The result? The last ~1/4 of the bowl that I don't smoke is mostly the lower quality leaf/stem bits anyway and gets tossed in the compost bin with the rest of the tar/ash. This way.. I'm not smoking my crappy bits, nor am I wasting my tasty bits...
