The Periques in the RO Series Perique Blends are straight St. James Perique, processed by Mark Ryan, but they come from individual growing regions within St. James Parish, so they can be considered "varietal" Periques. Mark only did this one year, so the quantities are very limited and only used in the RO Series Perique Blends and in our Golden Triangle series. If you want true St. James Perique, there's a 50 gram tin included in the Golden Triangle Collection.

Acadian Perique is made by blending St. James Perique with dark air-cured tobacco that has been processed in the same manner as Perique. This not only helps with availability, but it also produces a more consistent product from year to year.

The dark-fired tobacco that is Perique-processed is called Acadian Black and is only used (to my knowledge) in McClelland's Royal Cajun series and in the Tsuge Gods series.

I may not have been clear, I wasn't saying it had to be from a single farm to be "pure". I was saying that it couldn'the be Acadian, because Acadian is perique mixed with leaf not grown in that area.
And I think my statement that the RO blends are single farm sourced was incorrect. Russ used the term "region", not "farm". So obviously a mis-statement on my part.

I would like to see a map with these varietals marked on it. Is it possible that there might only be one farm/estate growing some of these?
I have bought the Golden Triangle blends but have to admit it is a little bittersweet since this is a one off.

So is there a difference between the Golden Triangle series (blended by Russ) and the RO series (blended by Russ)?
I'm thinking Golden Triangle Belmont and RO Series Perique Blend B-41, for example, might be the same blend?
I was wondering the same thing.

The Golden Triangle series has the same amount of the base(virginia/burley) and perique in each blend. The RO series uses different tobaccos in each blend to compliment each varietal of perique.
So far I've tried two blends from the Golden Triangle and was surprised at how different they are. Grand Point tastes like a typical perique blend; sweet, fruity, and with a hint of cocoa. Paulina on the other hand is more peppery and has a sourness that lingers. There's also an unusual minerally flavor that reminded me of freshly crushed rock dust or cleaning chalk erasers in elementary school. Not a bad flavor, just different.

As for smoking straight perique...I smoked a mini cob's worth about a week ago. I didn't smoke it all in one sitting, but over the course of a couple of hours.

I was smoking McLelland's blending perique.

My taste buds were ghosted for at least 12 hours.

Interesting, but is it pure? And assuming it is, what are the effects? I can see it ghosting or being overwhelming

The Martins who were mention above are the real deal. Ryan came along way later and may make a better grade as he says, but it is the Martins who were the last men standing in all this.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/05/us/tobacco-lovers-discover-mystique-of-perique.html?_r=0
GRAND POINT, La. — About 15 years ago, the world supply of the pungent Cajun tobacco perique was down to about five barrels. One of the rarest tobaccos in the world, it comes from St. James Parish, about 50 miles west of New Orleans.
The market had been declining since a peak in the 1920s, and Percy Martin was the only full-scale farmer left. A few bad seasons had knocked his production down to the point where perique was on the verge of extinction.
Mr. Martin died last year, but not before he saw the tobacco he had spent his life with make a nearly miraculous recovery to what might be its biggest business success. His son Ray took over the farm, and this spring Ray Martin has 236 barrels sitting on his barn floor — the most he could remember seeing, ever.
“I started getting more people, must be five years ago,” Mr. Martin said. “We just kept it going. We were the last ones planting.”

Thanks Jackswilling.

Imagine 256 barrels weighing almost as much as a tractor tire... Mmmm.

I smoke straight perique occasionally. Or at least straight out of a McClelland tin. It is acrid, but not overwhelming to my tongue, but then after years of chain smoking a pipe, I could strip paint with my tongue, ha ha.

It's really suprising to me to read all of you smoking straight perique. From what I've read, Perique is like chilli, you add it as condiment, but you don't eat it like that. I guess it's worth a try.

I just ordered two of the Golden Triangle assortments, as well as two each of the remaining RO Series Perique blends that are available through pipes and cigars. (Seems like they're the only ones who have the stuff, might've been an exclusive deal.)
Spent waaaaaay too much money. No more tobacco purchases for a while. Hope these are as good as they sound!
