I'm going to be taking a 3 day trip next month, and was wondering what was the best way to bring along my pipes and tobacco. Should I bother getting a pipe pouch (such as this) or just take my pipe in the little leather bag it came with and the tobacco in its original pouch/tin?

Though I haven't traveled with pipe yet, I plan on using my combo pipe/tobacco pouch. It will be in my carry on bag. Are you going to carry it on or put it in checked luggage? I would imagine that nice pipe pouch would keep your pipes protected.

Probably should have been more specific, going to be traveling by car, so at least I won't have to worry about them being tossed about. I think my main concern was if the pouches would keep the tobacco fresh during the trip, or if I should just bring a tin or two along with me.

I went on a weekend trip last weekend and I took two tins, and a small bag of bulk. I keep my pipe in a crown royal bag since it didn't come with a dust cover, and I put that, along with a few pipe cleaners, my lighter, matches and baccy in a wooden cigar box that I keep my random pipe stuff in. Worked out well though. At the same time, if you have been thinking about getting a pipe/baccy pouch, this could be the perfect excuse to do just that. Enjoy your trip either way!

I highly recommend a good quality pipe case/pouch. As I travel for a living I can say that a good case will protect and organize your pipes far better than just tossing them into a bag. I have roughly 50 - 60 pipes in my truck and they are all housed inside pipe cases. I have yet to have one get broken inside a case.

I bought a very nice 4 pipe case on ebay made by castleford and it has a separate compartment for pipe tools, matches, and tobacco.

In lieu of an actual pipe case, simply use a regular sock for each pipe.

For the tobacco, I do have a nice zipper style leather pouch but I use it to hold the variety of zip-loc baggies I carry. I will usually have at least 4 bags with me for variety.

The snack size zip-loc bags will keep your baccy at whatever moisture content you start with for a hella lot longer than 3 days.

Not classy per se but it do work!

I bought a 7 pipe case from smokingpipes.com and just brought it on my trip to Europe last week. Worked out great with pockets for tobacco, tools, etc.
I actually only travel with 3-4 pipes but I find that this is what actually fits comfortably as the pipes were on the larger side...

I have always just used a pipe sleeve and thrown a couple of tins in a canvass bag that I bought for this purpose. I don't usually travel with more than 3 or 4 pipes though. I have been looking at a pipe case, it just seems expensive and I would rather have a new pipe.

I use a two pipe leather case (or as my wife puts it, my pipe purse) and it works well. I'd never carry a pipe by itself, though I'd be to afraid of damaging one of my babies!

OFF TOPIC: Pipetrucker, do you wear the hat and the bow tie while driving? Because, if so, you are my hero.

Depends on my mood, but I often do, yes. I have several bow ties and do enjoy wearing them. I also have a number of hats of various styles from the Homburg in that image to ball caps and fedoras. I am currently seeking out a vintage silk top hat but so far no luck.
A common phrase I hear from some of my customers is "I have never seen a trucker wearing a tie".

When I travel the various blends go into snack baggies, as mentioned earlier it keeps it fresh a while. I usually pack half a dozen pipes, but am a little scared of the soft pipe pouches, although I'll use one if my pipes are always being carried around by me. My travel case for the pipes is a converted hardside poker chip case. I took the trays out and added some foam, egg crate style with the lumps and bumps, and the pipes are cushioned and protected. Having many freehand and bent pipes the pipe pouch doesn't always accomadate them nicely.

Thanks for all the replies. If I can get a not to expensive case I probably will. But good to know that zip locks will keep my stuff fresh for a couple of days if I don't.
