How can you be tough smoking pipe? Daniel Day-Lewis was definitely tough in Gangs Of New York, but not when he was smoking. I mean how can you punch another guy without messing up the ashes in your bowl? No pipe smoker in real life will do that. At least, put the pipe down then kick the SOB in the dingding. Now, Popeyes is a different story. He's an old salty sailor, and a cartoon character.

Don't be to sure of that.

The real inspiration for the rowdy animated mariner came from someone who was known to be a fighter and was most likely to throw hands after a few drinks.

Yes indeed Gandalf... But Samwise was tough in many ways, some very subtle ways, so much so he was able to carry the ring for a time and was quite resistant to its temptations...

Gandalf carries a ring of power for 2,000 years. Gandalf's problem, being a similar entity to Sauron, is the temptation to use it. Hobbits were never part of the plans for the rings; they weren't made with them in mind, and their simple nature makes them somewhat more immune to power.

In the 20's and 30's there were tons of guys smoking pipes, (Tracy, Gable, Powell, etc.) but I don't know if any of them were tougher than Bronson.

Some folks don't know this (younger fellas) but Popeye started out as a movie star, as the cartoons were made for the movie theaters back during that era.

However, Eva Green with a pipe is someone I definitely wouldn't cross!
