Toughest Pipe Smoking SOB in Movies.

I started watching old movies several years ago. Many of the characters in them if not all were smokers. Some smoked cigarettes some smoked pipes.

My aim is to find and vote for the toughest SOB pipe smoker from the good old movies of yesterday.

I’ll vote for my favorite pipe smoking character as the replies come along so please do name who you think is YOUR pick for the toughest pipe smoking character in the movies. Let’s start from the 1930’s and end in the 1980’s.

Not from old movies, but these two were pretty tough. One dragged himself across desert with a broken leg, the other taught english with just a knife.

Spock was pretty damn tough, in movies, tv and reality.

Pretty sure this guy would stomp Lee Van Cleef.

This bad mf fought Shelob and won.


Not really old movies, but tough pipe smokers in film/tv for sure.

In the 20's and 30's there were tons of guys smoking pipes, (Tracy, Gable, Powell, etc.) but I don't know if any of them were tougher than Bronson.

How can you be tough smoking pipe? Daniel Day-Lewis was definitely tough in Gangs Of New York, but not when he was smoking. I mean how can you punch another guy without messing up the ashes in your bowl? No pipe smoker in real life will do that. At least, put the pipe down then kick the SOB in the dingding. Now, Popeyes is a different story. He's an old salty sailor, and a cartoon character.

Yes indeed Gandalf... But Samwise was tough in many ways, some very subtle ways, so much so he was able to carry the ring for a time and was quite resistant to its temptations...

My most favorite pipe smoker tough guy from the good old movies is and will always be Anthony Quinn’s portrayal of Col. Andrea Stavros from the Guns of Navarone. He was such a macho man from the start of the movie until the end. If you haven’t watched the Guns of Navarone please do and I guarantee you won’t be sorry.

Another tough guy pipe smoker actor was and will always be Charles Bronson.

Yes, but he also represents the 'everyman" or 'reader' who never loses faith and wants to get the quest over successfully so he can get back to what's important ... his garden and Rosie !
