While you’re at it- may as well look at 1 oz sample blends from tobacco shops that ship online. Basically the same price for much better variety.

I’d recommend an oz of Black and Tan from The Country Squire.

If you're in Illinois, you owe it to yourself to make a pilgrimage to Iwan Ries.

That said, I agree with tradition that Carter Hall and the newish Amphora pouch line are a decent place to start.

Don't smoke the OTC that olkofri has tried, as they apparently suck. There should be some that he hasn't tried, though... nnnn

C&D has a great number of blends in bulk that could keep a new smoker entertained for a while. Those are OTC if you go to the right counter, aka your local B&M tobacconist.

If they were still made, I’d say Sugar Barrel and Walnut. Some say the match versions available on P&C are pretty good, I’ve never tried them myself. In the mean time, Carter Hall, Prince Albert and Half & Half are all good.
