This early, I second the notion that you try every tobacco you can find. Get 1-2 oz samples of lots of different blends.

Ball 4oz jam jar are your friend during this time.

Once you have some blends you love, especially if they have any connection to STG, go fast and go deep. It will never be cheaper (less expensive) than it is now. I don't have $5 Balkan Sobranie stories. I started in 2012. But I remember $5 Orlik Golden Slice.

Bulk tobacco, even with cost of jars is generally cheaper. Pack it tight in those jars.

Have fun with it!

I love smoking aromatics. 9mm charcoal filters are my friend. Also 6mm in some pipes. Rarely ever get bit when using them.

Hopefully aromatics cellar ok, as my copious mason jars full of Lane Black Raspberry are a joy to look upon!

I bought a mason jar vacuum sealer. Seems to work well, although many say it’s not needed.

As Embers said pack’em tight. I noticed the jars that haven’t sealed as well on their own were not.

@Chasing Embers, do you think I should combine some jars to pack them tighter, or is it better to just leave them unopened for cellaring?

Agreed there. Have a bunch of the 4oz for samples I’ve received. Some of these I wasn’t fond of, so into the cellar they went to be tried again later.

One thing to keep in mind is that new and limited runs of blends are released every year that you'll be interested to try. So you may want to budget your future purchases to account for these additions.

I'm relatively new to pipe smoking. Maybe 4 months into it.

Initially, I loved it so much, I went a little hog wild and bought a wide variety of tins to try. I wanted to experience it all. I bought English blends, Burleys, VaPers, Aromatics, Codgers, and almost anything that sounded good. I even bought twelve different "blending" tobaccos so that I could learn the differences.

I recently decided to do a little math, and Google told me that a 2oz tin has roughly 20 bowls of tobacco in it. In the past 4 months, I've purchased nearly 70 tins.... which comes to about 1400 bowls of tobacco. I only smoke about 2 bowls a day, so I have roughly 2 years worth of tobacco in my cellar.

Thankfully, lots of tinned tobacco ages well... but I've heard that some tobacco does not ... like Aromatics?

Does that mean I should smoke through my Aromatics first? The problem with this, of course, is that I've heard that for new pipe smokers, Aromatics are the hardest to smoke. (I am discovering this to be true. Lots of tongue bite and relighting).

Right now, I have about 9 tins open, and it seems like it is taking me FOREVER to get through them. I'm so eager to go on and try other tins, but I don't want to open more until I get through most of these 9. But even these 9 tins contain 180 bowls, or 3 months worth of smoking.

So what is your recommendation? (Aside from not buying any more tobacco for a while.)

Maybe I should just start smoking about 10 bowls a day? ;)
“Maybe I should just start smoking about 10 bowls a day? “

Everyone needs a worthy goal! 😂

English blends tend to be easier to smoke, i.e. less chance of tongue bite than smoking a pure Virginia or VaPer blend, so I would start there if you're not adverse to Latakia's smokiness.

If you have the space and are serious about it, get a bunch of mason jars as stated before. You’ll want to figure out what blends speak to you and your rotation. Don’t take too much advice on what kinds of blends to smoke, just try as many as you can to figure out what you like. Aging can be a beautiful thing, but not always. Who knows, but you’ll likely like different blends this time next year. Any blends that you open will be fine at the rate your smoking for the next few years.

Dude I have found aromatics that I left in a jar years ago and there is some lose of flavor but not like it ruined it. Often I like them better that way because they do mellow out get less bite and the tobacco flavors become more pronounced.
The thing with aging it's not good or bad just different. And what's good or bad really is pretty personal so....
It's always a slight gamble but in general you'll be safe waiting till you want to smoke something. Basically it's not going to spoil.

Good to know! I’ve worried for sure.

Buy buy buy. It’s only going to get more restricted and more expensive.
personally I’ve never smoked a blend that I hated. Even if I buy eight ounces and it’s not my best choice, I can still enjoy a bowl or two and put it away for the next time.

I'd suggest smoking anything that isn't aromatic and is ready rubbed.

For years the standard advice was to start with a cheap aro like Captain Black or CB's bulk equivalents 1Q and RLP6. I found those to be frusterating for a number of reasons so I've avoided aros ever since with the exception of Molto Dolce. I'll probably give aros another chance when my smoking method is more honed. The blends that really turned me on to pipe smoking and made me determine I wanted to stick with it were Sir Walter Raleigh and Half & Half, I still smoke them both.
