The classic country ballad about a heat wave is now over thirty years old.

Harlan Howard would have never ever mentioned golf, so imagine it’s too hot to fish, too hot to hunt, and too cold at home.:)

One of my top three country music titles alongside “If You Want To Keep Your Beer Cold Put It Next To My Ex- Wife’s Heart” and “It’s So Hard To Say I Love You When You’re Sitting On My Face”.

View attachment 158999How it classified as a "Three Star" shows the individual who graded these pipes wasn't always competent. It is even more beautiful in person. I wish I had a camera I could white balance and a good place with some top notch lighting. The grain is interesting and ventures into being artistic. A fine bull moose as I've ever seen.

My Five Star is a Bull something, but it’s not magnificent, merely way nice.

My only early Star Grained marked pipe is a mere Two Star, and magnificent.

Sometimes, I wonder if Lee stamped and filled the appropriate number of stars to match an order.

I wondered the same. That five star Bullmoose is grained nicely. And so is the two star. The question is, when did the stars go into the stem. Before or after the order.

Here is a story for you.

A long, long time ago, I was the pool manager for a Christian camp on Lake Killarney in Ironton, Missouri. You know the camp I am sure... Camp Penuel. The pastor who ran it was a dreamer named Harry Douma. Anyway, a local who played guitar would sit with me by the pool as we played guitar together, told me the following story about his uncle.

His uncle was the book keeper for a logging firm. One day, the owner called him in and accused him of writing a check out to an employee for the employee's wages. The check was for $25,000 and had been signed off by the uncle. Clearly something was going on. Anyway, Larry - my friend's uncle - said to the owner, "What color is the the signature on that check?" The owner replied that it was red. Larry then responded, "In all of the years you've known me, have I EVER used anything other than a green pen?"

The owner thanked him for the information and went on about his investigation. Clearly Larry didn't write the check.

The moral of the story is that make yourself known by the habits you keep and people will know you for who you are.

I don't think the man who sent out the Lee pipes had very good habits.

By the way, I have a seven point three starred Lee straight bulldog like the one in your picture. The grain is only marginally better if it is better at all. In fact, it might be a little less beautiful.
Lee might have said,

Make 357 Three Stars and 52 Two Stars and no Four stars and 2 Five Stars.

Or Lee might have filled orders from pre made pipes, adding stars as needed.

The last option is semi fraudulent.

I think the whole idea of better grain to be semi fraudulent as a whole. Personally I like any grain I can get lost in, which isn't always the same grain that people call wonderful.

I have not looked at the news to see what’s been going on with the heatwave(s), but I do find it interesting, that while certain areas are getting really hot, the last few years out here have actually been getting cooler.

September is our hottest month, it will be interesting to see this year how it turns out.

Guess ill be thankful i live in northern michigan. It hast been brutally hot yet. I either smoke my pipe on the porch enjoying the beauty of the michigan country side or if its too windy or cold ill go to my garage which is finished. Last week was a few days in the 90's and the rest of the week was mid 80's.

We only got to 101F in the shade today, so not super hot. I usually enjoy my smoke first thing in the morning when it’s still fairly cool out. Also, for some reason, I find myself going more for a cigar rather than a pipe during hot summer weather.

Vegas Baby!!!
The other day my truck-mometer said it was 115 here in Vegas.

So, I sat in my truck, not running with the windows down and smoking some Sutliff VA slices while working on field notes.

Here’s a desert rat trick, since the buildings are burned and don’t have AC I don’t use my AC and just drive or park with windows down.

Why, you may ask. The answer is simple. Continually going between no AC to AC and visa-versa leads to a summer cold. Nothing worse than sneezing, running nose and aches when it’s 115 outside.

When it's hot outside, I smoke my 7.2 inch Savi Extra Lumberman. The smoke is cooler, and I think it also cools the air around me a smidge.

Agreed on your trick.

In a prior life, I was a line cook for about 18 years (and would go back to cooking needed, although it's a young man's game).

People thought I was crazy for wearing a hooded sweatshirt on breaks and after work in the summer, especially as a large American that runs warm to begin with.

I wore the hoodie to regulate my temperature after cooking in a 100+ degree kitchen for 8-12 hours a day. It worked as I rarely got sick (or maybe it was the immunity I picked up after living in a fraternity house for 3 years).

Well my personal record is over 140 F in Southern Iraq in 04

I saw mid 130's in Iraq in '91.

Working from a truck in Texas, I also used the ashdigger philosophy to keep from alternating extremes.

As a desert warfare unit, we trained in heat continually. What really surprised me the most in the middle east was how the body acclimates. We lived out of doors there for 7 months in full battle gear.

The 120+ of the day became the norm and, with proper hydration, etc, seemed normal after a while.

The crazy thing, when it dropped to 65-85 at night, we felt like we were freezing and, when permissible, stood around fire barrels with gloves and scarves, stomping our boots.

Now, I'm a pussy and sit around in shorts and flipflops with a steady 78 indoors and whine when I have to get into the hot car....

We've had some heat in Southern Indiana recently as well. Really humid as well. I only had one day where I gave up on a bowl and went inside. The temp was 110* qnd very humid. I don't smoke indoors out of respect for my parents but boy was I tempted.
