I've been around Asia a little (with the Navy) but never Japan, but Tokyo is known for its incredible density, so the propensity for social engineering and peer pressure may be increased even beyond what it is in the urban west. Japanese tourists visiting U.S. homes for the first time have the impression everyone is a tycoon because of the square footage of the houses, since even luxury Tokyo apartments are so small. I've always tried to figure out how the Japanese store all of the holiday tableware and decor they seem to own, tea services, etc. I wonder if the crowding cramps the birthrate, which seems to concern the Japanese a lot, it is so low.
