This is becoming apparent to me with every bowl. I just don’t know where to jump to next. Any recommendations for a complete newb who likes a bit of sweetness with some savory flavors as well?
Try the classic OTC burley blends.

Carter hall
Prince Albert
Sutliff ready rubbed match
Sir Walter Raleigh
Half and half
Sutliff estate
Sutliff prince Andrew
Amphora burley

You don't have to slowly work your way up. You can just jump in. I smoked codger blends exclusively for years, and then, as a lark, tried C & D's Visions of Celephais. I liked it immediately, but it took several bowls to fully appreciate the complexity and to differentiate the flavours.

Thank you guys for the replies and suggestions. I try some classics along with “newer” blends. I’m sure classic blends have to be doing something right to still be around. I look forward to slowly trying all sorts of tobacco. My original post was intended to see if I could take an educated guess at where to start other than aromatics. I like them but at this point in time I only get the cherry, vanilla, etc flavor. @dunny they are in jars and waiting faithfully

I’m not sure why, but I really want to try Half and Half as well as Sir Walter Raleigh. Not sure why but Prince Andrew just doesn’t sound appealing………. But serious about first two.

Yes sir you may. I just looked up some reviews and they both sound great. I will add them to the next order. Also, a couple questions; Can English blends have toppings or casings? Do they have to contain Latakia?
generally no and generally yes. But you can call a blend anything you want. You could make a copy of captain black and call it an English blend. There aren't really any rules for categorizing pipe tobacco. But in general English is going to have some latakia probably some oriental and Va. And casing yeah most tobacco does. Topping most likely they won't.

Quick update:
Stopped by a local shop and tried some Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bulls Eye Flake. I had my first aha moment. I love this tobacco. First blend that grabbed hold from jar note to finish of bowl and never let go. Sooooooo good imo.
You might ask how long it’s been sitting there… it is a blend that definitely tastes different depending on how long it’s been around. Easy blend to smoke and enjoy. The aha moment could serve as a gateway for you to a world of all kinds of tobacco that will make you forget LBF exists. ? Have fun and hang onto your wallet!

That’s a good point. I imagine it’s been there a minute as the shop specializes in cigars, but I will ask. As to your second point, TAD is quickly taking hold…….

Yeah, can’t blame you there, his stock is in the crapper for sure….

Congratulations of your aha moment though. I’m just back into it after a decade hiatus, and while I’m branching out more and more, I find the English blends, either more oriental or Latakia forward, are still my favorites. And FWIW, I prefer bolder food flavors.

I used to have a great uncle. He sometimes would light his pipe and the room would have a wonderful smell.
Later he would light his pipe and the room would smell horrible, a bit like roll your own cigarettes.
i often wondered why he would smoke the foul smelling tobacco.
But I think I understand it more now. The taste and room note are not necessarily the same thing.

It's great trying all the blends out there when you're starting out. Word of advice, don't invest in any one blend too much cos your taste changes as you develop your palate
I am already following that advice. I’m viewing this kind of like cigars. I like trying them and circling back from time to time to see if I still do or do not like them. I also keep notes to help from misremembering. I do my best to buy small samples as I usually only smoke a a bowl a day so even multiple small samples lasts a while. I’m sure I will miss some finer points because I don’t age to tobacco but ?‍♂️. Gotta start somewhere.

Smoking it as I type. Similar to bullseye and c&d bayou morning but different. It’s got a nice pepper taste without the nose tingle (maybe the alcohol flavoring). Also breadier to me than the others. I really like all three. Look forward to trying over time to see if a clear winner emerges.
