I'm a little late to the thread, but I was wondering the same thing and found the thread with the search.

In comparison to most of y'all, I fall pretty far onto the side of hot mess. I just counted and was shocked to find out I have 23 things open right now. Which is too many considering that I'm a one to three pipes per day guy. And definitely far too many considering that roughly 75% of the time I choose the same two things. So I guess I like to have lots of options. But only sometimes.

In my defense, it is worse than usual right now because I just started smoking a pipe again after a seven year hiatus and I'm doing quite a bit of experimentation to find replacements for things that have disappeared while I was away. When everything settles after that, I have a feeling it'll go back down to say 10 or 12.
Dude, you're fine.

I have about 40 blends "open", meaning that I have jarred them and will open any one of them if the mood strikes. I smoke, on average, about three or four bowls a week... Half of which are BCA or Black Arrow.

I like having the variety. Most of my open jars are from the past 9 months, but I have some as old as 2019. Experiment and enjoy.

I typically smoke from 6-10 blends in semi-rotation. I jar most of the tobaccos from the tins I open, save a few that I smoke the most often, and all the tobacco I purchase in bulk. When I buy in bulk or in 8 oz. tins, I keep the tobacco in large sealed jars and put 2 oz. or so in smaller jars from which I load my pipes. I have eight large jars and around 10-12 smaller jars. The tobacco stays moist for months at a time.

comforting to read this thread - at times i think myself an unorganized chaot, but this helps :)

to answer the question - about 10. i'll jar when i fear the tin might not be suited to keep the tobacco mostly in the state it was in when opened - the normal round "screw top" jars seem to keep everything perfectly in place humiditywise. i try to only open new tins when an old one has run out - can't keep myself to strictly adhere to that rule, though.

I have about 100 blends some jarred some tinned. I do not jar tins. But, some of the tins with the coffee lids aren't sealed that great. Sutliff leaks. I lost all flavor in Sutliff Great Out Doors, Molto Dolce started to die, and Molto Dolce is strong. I haven't had a problem with C &. D cans. All the real tins that I have are good so far. Sometimes they reseal so tight I have to use a tri to reopen them.

This question is really targeted at the pipe smokers that only enjoy 2-3 bowls a week. Do you;
Open a tin of tobacco, jar it and smoke it before opening another. I find a tin last in the region of 5-6 weeks this way?
Or:
Open a tin smoke a bowl, jar it. Then repeat for different tobaccos and end up with many jars from which to choose?
I do the former in an attempt to build my cellar but also I'm a little paranoid about tobacco drying out.
Just popping in to say how much I love Scotland and the Highlands were the most beautiful place I’ve ever been in my life (sorry Ireland, close second!). I’m also not as frequent or enjoy less at a time if I am. I’ve got tobacco I’ve opened in the Mylar from KBV that’s just as fresh a few months down the road, open tins are usually stored in something not airtight but enough to keep them from drying out but I’m in the jar it and have more blends to choose from since I’m still exploring. No pipe rotation or blend rotation here, just whatever catches my fancy at the time.

I started out at about 3-5 bowls/week, and over that time, I've built up a large rotation. Now I'm prob about 10 bowls/week.

I have a wide assortment of blends that are jarred up, some for storage (1lb bags, bulk, etc) and some for open tins in regular rotation. At the current moment, I have close to 40 small 4 and 8 oz jars that I tap into on a reg basis.

I like variety, what can I say?

I always jar my tobacco after opening it. If it is something that isn't in my regular rotation I may not smoke it all for months or years. Really just depends on how much I like it, or if I think it needs to mellow out for a few months.
