I have about ten jars that I keep tobacco that I smoke. Some are little more than a year old. It gets boring for me if I smoke same thing all the time. That was when I smoked once a day. Now I might smoke once a week, I'm not sure if one tin of something in a jar would do. By next week, I won't remember what it was like.
That true it all feel similar after few days

This question is really targeted at the pipe smokers that only enjoy 2-3 bowls a week. Do you;
Open a tin of tobacco, jar it and smoke it before opening another. I find a tin last in the region of 5-6 weeks this way?
Or:
Open a tin smoke a bowl, jar it. Then repeat for different tobaccos and end up with many jars from which to choose?
I do the former in an attempt to build my cellar but also I'm a little paranoid about tobacco drying out.
The latter. I’ve got about 80 “open” tins that are in jars (each a different blend). I imagine this is like so much else in pipe smoking: whatever works for you. I’ve got a convenient place to put them in a sort of organized fashion, and I like the variety. However, I could see how others may find it irritating to deal with that. 🤷‍♂️

Great question! I was asking the same thing to myself a month or so ago. I smoke maybe a little more than you a week - four or five bowls, so a tin can last a while. I had a lot of new ones I wanted to try out, but was worried about them drying in jars. Some one said that I could open as many as I wanted and there would be no issues if they're in sealed jars. And I have to say that I've found that to be true. I have maybe 15 or so tins opened in different jars and even a year later, they've smoked wonderfully - and improved - especially the Virginia blends. As long as you have good sealing mason jars, I don't think you'll have an issue. If I wait til I finish a tin, I might not smoke the new ones I bought for years! If I try them and like them, then I can throw in a tin or two when I purchase, to stock up on the ones I like.

I smoke sporadically these days, I am trying to smoke up out the blends I have jarred. I have pretty much settled on 3 favorites, so after the various jars are consumed, I will be opening tins as needed and smoke from there. I think MSO said it, tobacco is more forgiving than you think.

I jar everything. It's so easy to stick it in a jar, I have no reason not to.

After that, sometimes I'll smoke a single blend for a couple of weeks. Sometimes I change I'll rotate around. Having things jarred allows for either choice.
So you don’t have to stick with one blend foe a week or two before trying something else? But I should change pipe when I change blends?

I've got about 40 jars that I consider "open". I buy a lot of bulk blends, and they go right in a jar when they get to the mailbox. But I'll also empty a tin into a jar as I fill my first bowl.

I have a lot of blends that I haven't tried yet that are cellared. I like variety, but I am working on emptying jars now before I open new blends.

I jar everything I open. I’m currently dipping into 7 different blends.

There’s a few more stragglers I’m not so excited about but not about to throw out because they’re worth occasionally revisiting.

I basically try to keep a decent representation of the spectrum from pure Virginia to a Latakia heavy English. The middle would be something like a Windjammer or Key Largo. I don’t smoke aromatics so that makes it far easier to manage how many blends I have going.

You have put onto words my quandary better than my original question. I now have 4 opened tins of different varieties jarred and it's made a huge difference to my enjoyment of my tobacco. 4 because that's the jars I have, feel a glass jar purchase coming on soon to try more. Thanks for the response

Well since restarting pipe smoking at the first of the year I have purchased quite a bit of tobacco & most of it is aromatic , because I like it. I have bought some bulk & just hot 12oz of Sweat Natural yo try & maybe blend a bit.
But I think I have a a hood sprinkling of English blend in tins and some burley & Virginia’s.
Haven’t tried many just keep buying. But I go like the taste of mild aromatics & English.
The very hot summer has really sad lowed my smoking outside due to the intense heat in the South West desert, yesterday was 130 degrees at 3pm.
Just yo hot yo smoke & enjoy!!!🥵

I leave the tins open for a like 3 or 4 weeks. If it's not gone by then, into a jar it goes and stays on my rotation shelf. The jars sit there until empty. Then I go to the cellar to find something complimentary, like if I finish my tin of Eastfarthing I'll go looking for another crossover to take it's place. Or if it hasn't been smoked much at all, I'll return it to the cellar and bring up something else. That way I usually have about 10 "open" tins/jars to rotate.

That's how deal with my varying mileage. It'll depend far too much on your own habits and comfort for you to get your milage dialed in.

I usually have about 5-6 open tins at a time. Then I resist opening anything until one jar runs out. Still some variety, but not a complete cluster-mess
This right here is what I do as well.
5 or 6 open and used. Bulk in jars and tins get rotated for age and or rarity. I wont crack a tin unless I have another to replace it as I always strive to keep several hundred tins of everything produced in my stash.
I have stashed tins and tins to use so I will buy 2 of everything I order at a minimum 1 to use and 1 to save. If I really like it Ill get more.

I'm a little late to the thread, but I was wondering the same thing and found the thread with the search.

In comparison to most of y'all, I fall pretty far onto the side of hot mess. I just counted and was shocked to find out I have 23 things open right now. Which is too many considering that I'm a one to three pipes per day guy. And definitely far too many considering that roughly 75% of the time I choose the same two things. So I guess I like to have lots of options. But only sometimes.

In my defense, it is worse than usual right now because I just started smoking a pipe again after a seven year hiatus and I'm doing quite a bit of experimentation to find replacements for things that have disappeared while I was away. When everything settles after that, I have a feeling it'll go back down to say 10 or 12.
