I thought it to be an extremely mild all day smoke.

Maybe the strength is not consistent between batches. This could be the case with other blends too..

It just gives me the feeling like Ive had a chew for a couple hours.. I could smoke a cigarette, but the taste is off because I dont really want it. That stuff keeps me on the edge of hiccups.. like I got stuck somewhere without a spit cup.

It smokes like an ultra light cigarette to me. ODF is a bit stronger, similar to a Marlboro Red in strength.

In the old days of Alt Smokers Pipes, Jim Beard was an evangelist for the higher nicotine content Gawith Hoggarth blends as a way to kick cigarettes, on the very reasonable assumption that only higher nicotine content pipe tobacco could really substitute for the nicotine dose that was more efficiently delivered by even “light” cigarettes. A good friend of mine gravitated towards GH Rum Flake and hasn’t touched a cigarette in over 25 years. Of course, he is now addicted to Rum Flake

Hi all,

A friend of mine has been a cigarette smoker for many, many years. I wanted to see if she might like pipe smoking instead (she had tried it in her youth).

I ordered a couple of corn cob pipes (one for her, one for me) and I wanted to provide her with some tobacco samples.

She smokes American Spirit roll your own cigarettes. Any suggestions on pipe tobacco that she might like? Nothing too fussy or something that's going to give her tongue bite (goopy aros are probably a no go). She works in light construction so it would be good if they were tobaccos that she could puff on for 5 minutes, put out, relight, all day long.

Thanks!
My god, does she lift weights, rebuild engines and cook on charcoal too?

That's not "light construction" lol, I grew up hanging sheetrock and plastering (they typically used plaster in the old days, not as much joint compound like they do today) when I wasn't on the farm...aint nothing light about it LOL

I worked on a hanging crew for years.. If we ever saw a big lady, we'd always joke that she could hang sheetrock.. or threaten to replace the little guys with a lady hanger. Haha It's extremely hard work, but I miss it. It's like going to the gym 8 hours a day 6 days a week.

I think a lot of the posts here are on track about higher nicotine content bends being a good alternative for an ex cigarette smoker, particularly an RYO smoker. But Picayune, for example, tastes very different to me in a pipe than it did in the few cigarettes I had a friend use their rolling machine to make (I broke off the filters). It might be that something with both a high nicotine content that has a more “flavor forward” profile, such as some of the GH offerings, would be something to consider.

It's not an easy switch to make, totally different things. You're right though, the flavor of pipe tobacco is much better. Focusing on that will help. There are a few blends that will really make your head sweat with nicotine, that will curb your urge to smoke.. the strong blends have good flavor too sometimes. But, If you dont get yourself off the nicotine a little, you'll get bored with the strong blends. Eventually you'll smoke cigarettes..

It's not the same, and you can't make it be. It is a better way to enjoy nicotine and flavor. Trying to quit smoking with a pipe is a tough one.. It's like chewing gum so you don't think about it as much.

I ordered a 3.5 oz tub of this yesterday. After reading the reviews on TR and watching some videos on YouTube I was curious. I usually smoke 5 Brothers for my nicotine kick along with Dark Birdseye.
Ryback is good for a nice kick. But very similar to cigarettes. Burns fast, bland, and good nic kick. But that's not to say I don't like it any.

The key question as I see it is, would she like a change or does she want continuity with her cigarettes? If a change would be good, she might try a light Lat English blend or a milder Balkan, or a tobacco forward aromatic. If she wants something reminiscent of cigarettes, I'd still move her more in the pipe direction with a nice Virginia or Va/Per, but not bag tobacco, something distinctly blended and cut for pipes. Coach her gently on not inhaling, on sipping, and slowing her cadence. It seems cigarette smokers start by wanting to soak down the smoke, and that misses the pipe smoking experience completely. Then I'd step back and let her find her own way, answering questions when asked. It should be an enjoyment not a tutorial. Teach by example.
This is brilliant advice, thank you! I think that I'll get her some kind of Virginia or Vaper and a light English blend, because I want her to taste something that goes beyond just matching the cigarette taste if she's interested. Of course, I've learned as a beginningish pipe smoker that there's real value in smoking one tobacco while developing your skills.
As far as a light English or Balkan--Chelsea Morning? Skiff? Or a bulk blend? Any suggestions?

She's pretty impressive--an incredible trout fisherman, excellent carpentry skills, jack of all trades, cross country skier, can take down a tree and split wood with the best of them! She's taught me so much and this is one way I'm trying to give back. She's low on funds and would never buy a pipe herself I think because of this.

I know you've gotten ton of feedback on which tobacco to get her given that she is a cigarette smoker. But, may I suggest this Virginia Flake . It isn't cased or topped and is going to be extremely close to the American Spirit she is smoking now...I should know, I smoke AS sometimes too when I get into hay baling and I have to go 16 to 18 hours a day for several days putting up hay and a pipe is too inconvenient to use. My son is the one that smokes the AS's regularly (not loose though), but I bum off of him when he's helping me out. Not a ton of nicotine in it just like the AS and tastes very similar to it.
