Lol whatever it was it was stoved very black and I guess they stopped making the good stuff a long time ago the law is all smokes have to have low nicotine now er something. Weird that in my lifetime something so world iconic and renown is just straight up canceled. Imagine Lucky strikes just being gone or reduced to a shadow of itself. You apparently can’t stand them but if they made a pipe form it would be my desert island blend ?
Gauloises and Gitanes, Disque Bleu ,those use Paraquain tobacco yet Maryland and some domestic grown tobacco, but all of these are a shadow of what they used to be back in the days, the very same is true for German Roth Hand cigarettes, all cigarettes in the EU tastes 'diluted'

I just got back from Ireland this past Monday. Not sure if your friend already made their trip but I did find a newsagent in Cork called Kelleher's on North Main Street that carried a small selection of tobacco. Among the options were Yachtsman plug, Condor plug, Clan, and Special Virginia. Also, Bubble Brothers, a wine vendor in the English Market carries tins of James Fox tobacco blends but the price for each is 40 euro. I hope this is helpful.

I don’t know enough about the offerings but from what I saw on offer at the Peterson shop I was glad I took tobacco I enjoyed with me rather than spend $$$$ there. Now, the array of pipes on display? Amazing. You can’t see them all because those panels slide to reveal more. E18EE3F0-0DBF-407B-8BA3-2EF0797F3629.jpeg

All i know about Jfox in Dublin is 5 yrs ago i paid $40 each for two RASS (Cuban robusto) that was the end of my purchasing there, a week before i left on the trip i bought a cab of 50 for $375…the sin tax is murder.

thou me and the guy i worked with and was traveling had the cigars at an old Irish pub, cigars and Irish coffee sitting outside ppl watching was totally worth it and the bartender saying “what can i get ya, boyo” was just a magic moment for this yank 😂

Is that Paraquain the secret ingredient? Hear D&R Picayune tastes maybe a bit like Gauloises wondering if includes a bit of this…
Thoughts?
Wanting recreate that flavor for a small batch.
I have found a bit of Kendal Dark begins to scratch the itch but wanting that secret spice…

Where in Ireland is your friend going? I've been to Ireland a handful of times and will be traveling there at the end of the summer. I always look for tobaccos that are hard to find for us in the states when I'm there and frankly, I'm usually underwhelmed by the the offerings. It's my experience that you may find Yachtsman and Condor plugs, Maltan, Special Virginia, as well as various Peterson tins at newsagents but you have to ask the counter person if they have pipe tobacco available as it's not out in the open. On my last trip there 3 years ago I visited M. Cahill & Son, a tobacconist in Limerick, and was disappointed to learn that, due to EU regulations, they were no longer allowed to sell loose tobacco and didn't have any of their house blends for sale. They did have some Peterson tobacco in stock but the price per tin was roughly three times higher than the average price here. The very lovely woman working at the time told me that if I was looking for tobacco blends by other manufacturers (I asked about GH in particular) she said I'd have to travel to Belfast. This all being said, I did visit Galway on the same trip where I happened to pop into P. Powell and Sons, a music shop, where to my surprise I found pouches of Velvan and Mick McQuaid plugs.
Don’t count on the Dublin Duty Free Shop at the airport. Shit loads of cigs but they no longer offer pipe tobacco, dammit!
