Tobacco Acquisition Disorder

Well, I am afraid of contracting this disorder as well! I did the same thing with Bourbon a couple of years ago, and my wife finally put her foot down when I had spent about $1k in a 6 week period (which she rarely does!). She said I was not allowed to buy more bourbon until I drank what I had... there was A LOT of drinking for the next couple of months! Plus a trip to my brother-in-law's cabin in Zion for a bourbon tasting weekend. (See photo attached, and yeah, I was trying cigars at that point too).

You know, if you need any help with the bourbon....

So I promised myself I would not Purchase anymore tobacco as I have A butt load, more than I can consume in my forseeable life. Smoking Pipes sends me an alert Rattrey's Old Gowrie is available..... 5 tins on the way.

I’m in Canada. Unfortunately I can’t suffer from this disorder. Old pipes to restore is another matter.

Perhaps try a sample of each of the main types of blends (I know I know the list is long so I'll try stick to some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head ) but try a straight Virginia (careful not to smoke it hot or it will bite ) a Virginia perique (vaper ) a Virginia burley (vaber ) ,a English blend , a Cavendish blend , and perhaps aromatics if that takes your fancy (remember they seldomly taste like what they smell like in the tin ) a balkan and perhaps a Lakeland blend (careful with these as some ghost pipes badly so use a cob ) and see which ones you prefer and try some different ones in those categories. Your tastes WILL change over time so if you don't like a blend, don't toss it. Jar it up and keep it for a while and come back to it and see how you like it in 6 months etc. I have Intentionally not listed any specific tobaccos as taste is subjective. But if you do a search on here or tobaccoreviews.com or most online tobacconists they will have categories (usually)

Soooo many questions.... but for the most part I think I am going just smoke this bag I have until I am more comfortable with just sitting quietly and enjoying the pipe and keeping it lit. I am sure as I read more, my questions will get answered. After I get through this batch, I will start to experiment.


You did say one thing that caught my attention, "careful with these as some ghost pipes badly so use a cob". Anyone care to educate me on that terminology, "ghosting"?

If I were on the west coast, I would in a heartbeat! That's a fine collection you have there. Cigars and/or pipes and bourbon....fantastic combo for a long afternoon on the patio.

Ghosting is when a particularly tobacco leaves a residue or remnant of itself in future smokes even if the tobacco is totally different. Eg Lakeland tobaccos have a floral geranium type scent (some find it soapy ) and this topping can essentially soak into the top layer of the briar causing future bowls to taste of it. Like a ghost hanging around .it usually goes away after a few bowls of an English blend but sometimes it can persist. In cobs and meerschaums it tends to hang around less or in the cobs case its cheap enough to toss if you don't like it and it doesn't ruin an expensive briar. Some folk keep specific pipes dedicated to Lakeland blends. I personally don't mind the ghosting too much . I find it leaves after a bowl or two. But then the Lakeland blends I like are very mild. Eg st Bruno or condor

It is not curable but it is a manageable disease. Just haven’t figured out how yet.

Well, it seems like this situation is like any.

1. A love for something

2. The eyes are bigger than the stomach

3. Trying to fill the empty void inside

4. So many others hoard, if I don’t buy it now, I may never get another chance, or who knows when.

#3 I think is a real biggie, when you see the massive amounts people buying in one haul, which certainly must make people realize, stuff sells quick, so you better grab while you can.

Stepping back into the pipe world several years ago, I never once imagined the level of insanity I see around here, when it comes to buying.

I seriously think some people need to look deep inside at this obsession, because it’s not healthy.

Even if I was filthy rich, I still wouldn’t buy massive hauls, it’s just not my nature. I simply buy what I need, also because I don’t even know if I will like it, and even though I like a particular blend, it’s not the end all for me, because there’s a world of thousands upon thousands of blends yet to explore.

#3 is a real serious psychological spiritual void of emptiness, people try to fill by buying, which many already understand this psychological condition.

Most of it for me was born out of perceived need to have a lifetime supply. I first came around at the height of the deeming regulations terror craze so I bought like mad.

Nowadays I only buy 4 or 5 tins of special releases that interest me, and restocks on a select few favorites.

Holy Crap, those of us not on the 48, boy, it’s getting ridiculous.

I just placed my first order a tad over $95 for free shipping from SPC, to beat the shipping costs.

By the way, it’s been in the 60s in the eve around here lately, WoOt like Sitka in the summer. LOL

I guess I'm more of a "Pack-Rat". I have jars and tins stashed all over my house. They are everywhere from the laundry room to my living room and my main stash is in my basement...lol

I don't spend what I'd classify as "a lot" on tobacco, but I'll usually buy enough to get free shipping if it is offered.

"Filling the void" - yep, realized a few years ago that that's exactly what I was doing with whisky, guitar stuff, pipes, etc. I sold off a lot of stuff and set limits on my purchases - can't own more pipes than will fit on my one pipe rack, etc.
I prefer it that way. Everything I own is one of my favorite things, now - no fillers, nothing taking up space that I don't actually use.
I still get the urge to buy more tobacco occasionally, but I limit my purchases because I already have a ton.
