Man, I cracked open my first tin of Peterson Irish Flake and was hit with a very strong aroma of Anise (Licorice), which came thru in the smoke as I smoked it too. Not too happy about the heavy topping.
Sorry to hear that. Try giving it a few more tries. Sometimes I hate a blend on the first go then a couple bowls later I'm hooked! Also, did you try letting it dry out for a little bit before you smoked it?
Hmm, very strange; I've never noticed any sort of anise or licorice flavour in Peterson Irish Flake myself, but perhaps they changed the recipe when they changed the tins? Admittedly, I'm still smoking the older rectangular tinned product...
I also have never smelled or tasted any anise in Irish Flake, just straight tobacco.
You can read my review of it here: Peterson Irish Flake - Pipe Tobacco Reviews
I hope they didn't change anything.
I can smell a hint of licorice too, as I'm smelling the new tin right now. I also could pick up a smell of raisins or maybe figs with this one here. After a few minutes of airing out it does start to go away and it helps make it a little less high maintenance smoke.
