I think I’ve heard that tobacco on reservations is tax free or something like that.
well since they arent considered american soil, they can do what they want. And technically you should expect to pay the proper taxes once you drive out of their jurisdiction....

Like that online tobacco store that ONLY sends purchased tobacco products to AIRPORT stores for you.

Growing your own tobacco is not an option in Oz
Extremely harsh penalties which may include time in prison
No that’s not true. I know a couple of people way up in Fort Mac who grow their own tobacco. A heated greenhouse on your property Is all it takes.

You can take your chances if you like
I hope you are on great terms with your neighbours

It is true I’m afraid, one cannot grow tobacco in Australia unless you want to play drop the soap with a guy called Trevor in a 6 x 4 cell…….

Charles Lamb

Now there’s a name to reckon with. I have Lamb’s letters, and his writings & sayings are studded with many terrific quotes. Here are just a few:

My theory is to enjoy life, but the practice is against it

The greatest pleasure I know, is to do a good action by stealth, and to have it found out by accident.

Don't introduce me to him," said Lamb urgently when a friend offered to present a man whom Lamb had for a long time disliked by hearsay. "I want to go on hating him, and I can't do that to a man I know."

Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.

I used to ship my tobacco from a company in US to Ireland. I would get away with two 50g tins at a time. But three tins and customs would seize it.
I think if its two they know its personal use.
The company would split my order imto seperate batches of two tins.
They have since been bought by a large company and now you can't access the website from Ireland.
This is a good strategy for shipping tobacco into Canada. There is no official amount for "personal use." I've had a $4 pouch of Half and Half assessed for $30 of tax. BUT by splitting shipments up into smaller amounts, some will sneak through, and the ones that are caught won't be quite so painful (most I've ever paid in tax on a single shipment is $130).

Legal Context
For all individuals in Canada, it is legal to grow a small amount of tobacco for personal use (generally up to 15 kg per year is cited in online discussions, though federal law focuses more on manufacturing and large-scale trade).
Might be true in Australia but it’s not true in Canada.

Yup we can grow up to 15kg per year for personal use.

Now if only I could figure out a way to make my own perique to have a lifetime supply of my own VaPer plugs, get some rustica seeds on top of that... I would be set.

Here it is straight from the Canadian Government stating that it is legal to grow tobacco for personal use.

Yes, under federal regulations, it is
legal for an individual to grow and manufacture up to 15 kilograms of tobacco per year for their own personal use and not for sale. No federal license is required for this specific personal use exemption.
Key regulations from the federal Excise Act, 2001 include:
  • Quantity Limit: The maximum amount is 15 kilograms of manufactured tobacco or cigars per year for the individual and each family member (18 years or older) residing with them.
  • Personal Use Only: The tobacco must be strictly for personal consumption and not for sale or other commercial purposes.
  • No License Required: Individuals meeting these specific personal use criteria are exempt from the requirement to obtain a tobacco manufacturer's license from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Where did you order from? I hope you don't get in trouble with them as well. For sure 24oz you're going to pay quite a bit. It sounds about right though for that quantity. I always do the duty calculation before I order to know what to potentially expect and to a request a refund on overcharging, (which I have successfully got). I also always keep it to small shipments - under four tins.

I looked this up too, somewhere I read you can still grow up to 200 plants here, don’t quote me exactly, which is actually commercial quantities, Canada for now is still OK, Australia has crossed the rubicon on another level, hopefully this improves in a few years where cooler heads prevail.

Also, you can challenge customs here on your tins if you know the laws, plenty of us still paying decent prices, about double, not as good as 3 small years ago, harder to build a cellar, but not tragic either…. For now.
