I'm kind of new to this forum. I notice that we have some thread titles that clearly define the topic to be discussed (specific). We also have some thread titles that look intriguing yet give no real information as to the nature of what is to be discussed (nonspecific). I'm also on other forums not related to pipe smoking, and it seems to me that specific thread titles used to be the norm, but nonspecific thread titles are becoming more and more common. I know its a minor point, but I have mixed feelings about it. Thoughts welcome.

I've written my share of headlines in publications, newsletters and such, so I put stock in precise, concise titles/headlines that accurately reveal what a post is about. One in twenty titles that are jokey ambiguous teasers may have a place, and if they are really clever and amusing, may get a chuckle and a nod from me. But writing those means you are truly witty and lucky that day, and frankly, most days we aren't. Show me you can nail a good title with accurate information and I'll trust you with the cheesy ones from time to time. We kind of have to earn those.

I couldn't agree more. To me, it seems people are trying to be clever by stoking curiosity to get you to click into their thread. I find it obnoxious and annoying, and purposely don't click those threads.

Very well put and I agree.

A well thought out, targeted thread tittle is an expression of polite respect for fellow forum members. There are varying degrees of writing skills amongst the forum members, not to mention familiarity with the English language and cultural differences (we do have members around the world). Add to this the unexplainable such as @BROBS and it seems a degree of tolerance and goodwill should be granted to the OP’s so as to not stifle the great variety of views and ideas exchanged here in the forum.

We did have a thread about ambiguous thread titles a couple of years ago. The consensus was that they were an obnoxious pain in the ass not a good thing. But people just can't resist the urge to weave a bit of mystery into what is often a boring prosaic subject. It's manipulative, annoying, and oft times effective in that it sparks a level of curiosity. But if that spark doesn't lead to ignition I'm not likely to bother with other posts by the same poster, or others of the same ilk.
