Being just a little fella I tend not to go for huge pipes. Well unless they have that P on the stem calling out to me.

bubba,
I found a pipe similar to yours, also in a flea market/antique shop. It was a smooth bent BBB with vulcanite stem. I tried smoking it once... took about an ounce of 'baccy to fill. I finally sold it to a dealer for several times what I paid for it, and heard it found its way into giant pipe maven Rich Esserman's collection, where it currently resides. I'm not sorry at all that I let it go!
I love my Ser Jacopo "Maxima", but there's a line there in re "big pipes" that I don't care to cross. :)

I've had my eye on a Doc Grabbow Big Pipe for awhile, I think thats about as big as I want to go, the giant pipes just look silly to me. Some of those look like they would take a whole tin to fill

I currently have two big pipes, both are WDC's. One is a bent churchwarden and the other is a 7" by 2 1/4" cased bulldog. I don't smoke them often but do enjoy them when I do.
Edit: Make that four. I forgot about my 1910 Patent copy Peterson with it's 2" X 1" bowl and a Peterson freehand that has a 1" X 3" bowl.

I don't remember where I found this photo.

The caption says "largest tobacco pipe... 1822"

hrmm.. that varies depending on what's in it and how hard I pull through it. I've never really thought about timing it. I'll find out this evening though and let you know. :)

Hey, wolfscout! I have one almost exactly like that but mine is partially rusticated... I love it, and I haven't broken it in completely yet. I've only been doing half bowls which equal most bowls anyhow. I may have to fire it up tonight...

Ya. I still don't get the whole thing with wearing gloves while packing the pipe. And of course, the gas torch for a lighter is absurd. That pipe must have been a store window display item.

I like larger pipes with bigger bowls--I can relax by the computer and let the pipe go out then re-light it later without having to pack another pipe. I would love to get a Bjarne or Ser Jacopo but not with my monetary funds :|.
I don't think I would like one of those giant pipes though, a little bit of overkill but to each his own.
