chasingembers,
If you're asking me, the one I bought is unmarked. I expect that for the price, its probably pressed meerschaum, but you never know. Is there a way to tell the difference?

If you wet your finger, some actually use their tongue, and touch the inside of the bowl, it will stick in block meer and not pressed. As for the cultured, from what I can understand, it's very close to the real thing.

I believe cultured Meerschaum is made from Meerschaum dust and a porous natural binder, such as clay or ceramic has been added.

This has been extremely informative.
To clarify, I bought the pipe from smokingpipes.com and it was listed in their "Turkish Estates" section. Although they very clearly stated that it has no markings and they do not know the maker, I assume they somehow determined that it did come from Turkey. Another assumption,on my part is that if its Turkish, it's either pressed or block meerschaum and not cultured.
The pipe is in the mail to me right now, but I anticipate it well be a couple of weeks making its way across the border (I'm in Canada) Once I get my grubby paws on it I'll do the saliva test and report back
Either way, for $50, I could not resist a meer in exactly the shape I like and its unsmoked so I get to experience the colouring process.

No doubt there. A meer twice that amount is an awesome catch. You did good brother.

Should be a great buy.
You can probably remove the slight markings on the bowls with water and a rag or even your hand rubbing it under warm water.

BTW, ....NICE pipe!!
After many years I just pulled out my old Strambach Calabash today. A pipe similar to yours has recently caught my eye, just waiting for the right planets to line up before I pull the trigger.
In my previous post I left off the Zappa attribution.
