The original Thomas Nast drawing was most certainly in black and white—if there’s any collectible value to the tin, leaving it as is would be best—however, @FLDRD is free to do whatever he chooses.How about painting it.

His suit is red, the holly berrys are red, white beard and eye-brows, etc.
I guess it would take a bit of time and patience, but would look pretty cool, I think.
And a green background, gotta be green.
