I have started posting on the forum a little more recently after a bit of an absence, and then today as I was replying to a post I received an alert on pipesmagazine that my IP address was banned and it promptly shut down my connection. Is this the work of the nefarious Sinister Six, the menacing cabal that covertly runs this site? Luckily I switched on my VPN and can post again but how long do I have until these vile miscreants shut me down for good?

IP block is a website safety measure instigated by Cloudflare or whatever service Kevin uses. In all likelihood your local IP is probably sending requests (that aren't porting through the VPN) that you're not aware of. Lots of Internet traffic is behind the scenes instigated by the various apps and add-ons (which may themselves be hidden) associated with your browser software.

Clear your cookies, check your browser add-ons, reinstall the browser. Standard stuff. Something's piggybacking on your outgoing Internet I think.
