The first time I saw Metropolis was in a History Of Film class that I was taking at UCLA. Fritz Lang attended to talk about his films, and one of these was Metropolis. After the screenings, the room was opened to Q&A.
Lang stood at the lecturn, a tall figure with what would be referred to as military bearing, his hair slicked back flat against his skull, a black eye patch over his right eye and what appeared to be a dueling scar on one cheek. He looked out over the auditorium like a emperor surveying his army.
The first student took the microphone and began to deliver a long series of compliments to Lang, flowery praise heaped on flowery praise. After a minutes of this, Lang held up his hand to signal the student to stop.
"Dis iss a load uf bullshit!!" said Lang, "Shut ze fuck up, und sit ze fuck down!" he concluded.
The auditorium erupted into applause.
Lang gestured to the crowd to settle down and said, "Now iss someone here who vants to talk about film und making stories?"
I'll never forget that class. And the ensuing hour of discussion about film making was phenomenal.
