Perhaps it is something leftover from when I was a kid, but I enjoy a film that I like much more if I happen to catch it playing on television rather than just popping in a DVD. There is a certain thrill, I guess.
Big Trouble in Little China.
A Christmas Carol (or Scrooge), just about any edition, but particularly the musical with Albert Finney.
The Quiet Man, of course.
The Music Man, with Robert Preston
Major League
Roxanne
This list could go on and on, but those are some of my favorites.
Forgot to include Trainspotting on my list and don't think I have seen it on anyone else's either.
Also not that it would ever be on tv but Pink Floyd live at Pompeii would definitely make me stop channel surfing.
Oh yeh, any George Houston movies from the 30's and 40's, Captain Calamity and a ton of others on TCM. There's always lots of pipe smokers, and he set the bar for the rest of the Hollywood men's men. IMO.
The Shining, Prince of Darkness, Death Proof, Shaun of the Dead, Goodfellas, Casino, The Big Lebowski, Wet Hot American Summer and Turbo Kid. Although Turbo Kid is pretty new, it will become one of them.
I don't have a specific list, I will stop for almost any film, the lower the budget/production value the better. I have an affinity for bad movies- I like to marvel at the flaws and try to discern the thought processes behind how and why the film was made. The most recent was Berserk, this gem from 1967:
Quiet Man gets listed by 3 out of 4 comments, but NO one else listed Waking Ned Divine? Is it just that no one else has seen it. If you liked one, how can you not like the other? It's classic Irish humor, and beautiful filmography. I have to stop on it every time I see it's on cable.
