@Professor Moriarty proposed this to prevent tongue bite he gets from some blends with no filter. I dont get bite but I prefer 9mm filters on some most blends.

He has been using activated charcol instead of meer chips and the like in the bottom of his unfiltered pipes with success. I though perhaps being the same medium they might function to give the filtered effect to my pipes that dont accept filters.

Amazon delivered some activated charcol a few minutes ago and I quickly loaded up a pipe. Thus far its intersting. I may have too much filtration going as Im missing some flavors. Of course its a different pipe with a different draw so its always hard to say with certainty. I can say that this is far closer to the flavors I get with a filter than when I just use meer chips. Anyway, I will have to experiment a little. I really hope it works because Ive some no filter pipes I really enjoy having.

How much charcoal are you using per smoke? One third full is the ticket for me. Your mileage may vary.
You smoke faster and more frequently than I, judging by your description and time stamps.
I smoke one bowl a day, approximately 1.5 hours/bowl.
Best wishes for your continued experimentation. 🤓

Ohhhh, boy! There's nothing I like better than some gimmick that promises a better smoke...even though I'm quite happy with a normal pipe. I'll remember to pop by my local gardening supplies shop.

In case you think I'm being sarcastic, by weight, I'm sure my pipe collection is at least 30% aluminum.

Including the Brial, which uses tissue or toilet paper (unused!) for its filtering medium.

Yesterday didnt work out. Today Im trying it after rinsing the activated charcol. I also put a couple of meer chips on top to insulate it from heat. I still suspect that while Im not burning the charcol I am getting flavor from it being warm. Thus far I cant get the quality of smoke I get from a 9mm filter. There may well be reason for its location other than tradition.

@Professor Moriarty Yes, the pipes I tried yesterday were loaded small and I also didnt finish them. I wasnt freight training a bowl.

EDIT: Im not gonna finish this one either. Im not ready to conclude total failure but its eating or masking the good flavors of my vaper blends. No fliter at least leaves them intact, there are just additional flavors. This tastes like nothing interesting...smoke...cheap smoke. I do think its the flavor of warm/hot charcol.

I know that natural tobacco gives off some pretty toxic chemicals but add to that the benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from heated charcoal, and you are just making a stew of toxins. I know, I know... we, pipesmokers, usually don't worry about the chemicals, but it's something to consider.
I'm not going to tell a pipesmoker that they are doing something wrong. Heck, maybe it solves more problems than it creates, but... for me, slowing down takes care of most of the issues that I come up against while smoking. But, if it adds to one's enjoyment...

An Alternative Technique to Avoid Tongue Bite :: General Pipe Smoking Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/an-alternative-technique-to-avoid-tongue-bite.104512/

I will continue to use this method. I pack bland ol' Carter Hall on top of charcoal pieces, so any flavor from the charcoal is a welcome addition.
I've always said that Carter Hall was dangerously bad, but I never imagined that it could lead to mixing the flavors with charcoal. See guys, let this be a warning!!! puffy

Have you considered using expanded perlite?

It would seem to have all of the desirous properties of activated charcoal with the added benefit of having been processed by exposure to very high (2000°F) temperature, which could possibly mean that it is relatively stable at lower temperatures.

An excellent suggestion!
Perlite and charcoal are both common soil amendments. I am unaware of any application of perlite for filtering smoke. This may be because perlite is considerably more expensive.
I have a bag of perlite in the gardening shed, next to the bag of charcoal.
I may give it a go.
Perlite dust is problematic. There are techniques to remove the dust.

A lot of people have great results with meerschaum chips, which would be slightly different or a lot different from the charcoal. One of the reasons i love meerschaum pipes over briar, no filter and still a nice dry and cool smoke,. i have read that people have had good results with chips in their bowl and if you're lucky you can connect with one of the carvers and get a massive back of meer chips for dirt cheap.
