If I may give my viewpoint based upon my close proximity to Kent State University, AKA, ground zero. They are the youth counterculture, however they may never leave the ideals that I disagree with. I do not base my bias upon their wardrobe, though they do look silly and are fairly easy to point out in a crowd. I also dislike the urban baggy clothes of the R&B culture. Call me a young codger. However the mindset of these hipsters is bringing upon a nanny state of mind. They need to be catered to through tax payers dollars. Health care, college tuition, etcetera. They demand federal and state involvement to accommodate every little sect of society. Now I know what you're thinking "Kelley, you are a bigoted ass". I'm not a bigoted, but perhaps an ass. I live with a certain mindset of this. Treat every human as a human, not as what they wish to project their appearance, gender, sexuality, race, religion, etcetera. I do not need to know the specifics of your personal life, nor do I care. It only becomes in my focus when OUR government steps in and makes it an agenda, just to have a voting base. Now to call these hipsters liberals, is a smack in the face to a true liberal. A true liberal does not want government to cater to their needs. Hippys are liberals, Hipsters are socialist. Now here comes my disdain. I hate socialism. I find it mediocre and only allows people to live an average life, coincidentally average man becomes a slave and never can obtain a better way of life. There is no more striving to become the best person you can be. There is only, "you make more than me, therefore you are privileged so I will complain till I get my way." which brings me to another point, the "guilty privileged movement". Get over it. This is the land of opportunity, not the land of "fair". You make what you put in.
As for them pipe smoking, I've only seen one guy my age (29) smoking a pipe, and he was not a hipster. Just a regular guy.
