If I'm back in the tractor today, I'll make a new list. Comparitive to this list.
And as for the source, it's a political site I look at weekly.

It's too bad about The New York Times. I enjoy some of their science articles, although I trust them a lot less of late. I ignore almost all of their book reviews but rare exceptions are great reading. I know better than to rely on a New York paper to ever say anything good about Texas. But lately, I've been avoiding them along with the other big media (MSN, ABC, NBC, Fox) because the agenda has made itself clear, and it begins with "stop paying attention to real problems and look at this symbolic one."

What crap. I swear he must be a freaking hipster.
Speaking of hipsters. I've been away from this forum for a while and when I came back it seems like it's been over run by hipsters. Thinking they want to smoke a pipe because it looks cool. WTH happened here?
Maybe I'm an old fart but I ain't that old. lol
Also who the F read's a newspaper anymore. Aren't they practically out of business?

It has? Crap... they're everywhere. I hadn't noticed too many but that's mostly because I shy away from the threads about appearances, being somewhat of a rumpled, fuzzy disposition myself.

Damn... I wonder if theres a lotion for that.
LOL... I think we have one or two, but to say that its been overrun is a bit of an overstatement. As Deathmetal said, just stay out of the threads like this one here... oh wait!

The modern man is going to go extinct at some point if he sticks to rule #25. I don't think homes gives a rat about the modern man's rules. He just wants to know where the modern man keeps his women and valuables and hopes the modern man sticks to rule #25.

On the topic of hipsters.
A. I have no real idea what one is....

B. If they smoke a pipe (I give a rat's 4th point of contact why.) then I like them. More voters that smoke pipes the more Washington and local government will leave us alone. That is a good thing!

C. The old guard, has historically, thought the fricking new guys (FNGs) are doing it wrong. I read a paper in University from a Roman scholar who complained about the younger Romans hair and how they wore the toga incorrectly LOL. The scholar sounded remarkly a lot like my dad.
Happy puffing to all!!

Yeh, if hipsters are the younger guys who dress like us older guys, then they make up the majority of pipe smokers. At the NOLA pipe show, the younger guys made up the vast majority of shoppers and even some of the pipemakers. Diss'n these guys is shooting the whole industry in the foot. And, I'm not sure what evil many accuse them of, but besides wearing old man hats and buying the most expensive artisan pipes, I'm not sure why we should put them down. The guys I met at the pipe show were all very nice, friendly, and very knowledgable about all things pipes. If a young guy wants to have a beard, wear old hats, and vintage clothes, like us, i think it honors us old guys. Are the only "real" pipe smokers the guys who drive trucks, stack lumber, or work in a coal mine somewhere?

That said, how would someone know whether someone on here is a hipster or not? I've not seen any posts that look more hipsterish, whatever that would mean.

One definition in another thread that talked about hipster was that "they" smoked pipes only as an affectation. But they still buy pipes and tobacco, net: a good thing for us all.

Amen. I have asked many times why there seems to be this pervasive need around here to bash the so called "hipster". I think that people just like to put labels on others, even if they don't deserve it.
I have said it before and I will say it again... the last thing that anyone in the pipe community should be doing is alienating anyone else who wants to be a part of said community, and contributes financially and culturally to that community.
You don't like the clothes they wear? Tough shit... your Dad probably didn't like the clothes you wore either.

I have the right to alienate whom so ever I wish. A pipe in the jaw does not make a person safe from a jibe or two. It's not a shield for bad taste or behavior I dislike. I will usually ignore such but, there are times when a comment is necessary.
One of my officers asked me, years ago, how I got away with call someone an "a__hole" without getting beefed. I explained to him that I only used the term on people who knew they were a__holes. It's the ones that are and won't admit it to themselves that are the problem. Sometimes you just had to take those people aside and read to them from the book. Once they knew what they were they were more likely to accept the epithet. One or two even modified their behavior. In my presence at least.

Really? I have never seen any hipsters around, maybe one or two, I mean there may be bunch of them, so what?
Also who the F read's a newspaper anymore. Aren't they practically out of business?

Well, I read newspapers every morning for an hour (online). Does that make me a hipster? :)

Warren, of course you have the right to alienate people, any one you want. Just like the rest of us, we all have that right. If my post indicated the some jabs and good humored fun was a bad thing, that was not my intent.
But it is tactically unsound to belittle and drive off a valuable group of our already small group just because you have the right to do so.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend!" I believe you care, in your own way, about the fate of pipes, pipe tobacco, and fellow pipers. Not saying your going to be taken warm showers in the wee hours with them. Just indicating you care about this hobby, pastime, religion of the pipe.
Driving off and alienating a group of pipe smokers hurts our cause. Allowing them to be them and enjoy their pipe smoking experience allows us to become stronger. Goodness knows stronger is always better than weaker.
Anyway my thoughts. Happy smokes to all!!
